Bill Gates Supporting Sant’Egidio AIDS Program

ROME, FEB. 16, 2006 (Zenit.org).- The Community of Sant’Egidio announced that it received a personal donation from Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, for its program for AIDS prevention in Africa.

A communiqué issued in Rome by this lay public association of the Catholic Church said the donation is for $200,000 a year for three years.

Sant’Egidio’s program is comprehensive and is building health care infrastructure, which is often lacking in areas hard hit by HIV. It is designed to be of long term benefit to the people, not simply a bandaid.

For example, in Mozambique:

THE FIRST STAGE of the intervention, realized with the contribution of the Italian cooperation in November 2000, is setting the bases for the realization of interventions of prevention and treatment of AIDS, focusing the attention on the maternal-childish departments, on the safety of blood and blood components, on biochemich and microbiologic diagnosis, as well as on support therapy and treatment of opportunistic infections.

We undertook structural rehabilitation and logistical support in three diagnostic laboratories and three transfusion centres of the regional hospitals. This rehabilitation of the various buildings and other logistical support was achieved during the first twelve months of the program.

As a result, since November 2001, these regional hospitals
are equipped with advanced diagnostic laboratories to monitor
antiretroviral therapy. They are destined to receive patients needing more specific treatments. From now on the health centres will work also as contact points with the
patients to be treated with antiretroviral therapy.

I was told by people from Washington State where he lives and goes to church that his wife is a catholic who attends mass regularly. Alot of his money in the past has gone to pro-choice organizations.Yet, he seems to be giving more to independent things such as vaccination for Third World countries etc.

Bill Gates father, William Gates senior, was in charge of the charitiable foundation for many years. He was very pro-choice

Melinda Gates recently took over the foundation. She seems to have done a much better job of managing the donations.
