I was under the impression that this thread was about Bill Maher and his absolute lack of dignity and taste, not about anyone else.

Right you are. I guess the very mention of Sen. Clinton’s name became blood in the water. 🙂

I am sort of surprised this thread has not been closed down because it has been off topic for several posts. I guess it was successfully hijacked, when if you want to discuss Hillary’s stand on abortion or her work in New York, then please start a different thread. Polarizing names such as hers is a tactic that some posters use in stirring up trouble.

Getting back to the President’s wife, there is no reason that she should be a target. She is a target for the Bush haters.

Arba Sicula:
She wasn’t a Senator then, so couldn’t vote either for or against the veto.

Her Republican opponent, Rick Lazio is pro-choice, though he opposed partial-birth abortions.
Two points. Do you support her position on abortion? And, Lazio wasn’t the only candidate running against her, though on the issue of life, he opposed partial birth abortions and she was against meaningful legislation outlawing these abortions.

Opinion has nothing to do with anything, simple good manners seem to go out of the window when political allegiency’s are brought to the fore.

What is the difference between some television presenter insulting someone on the television and a subscriber to a forum insulting someone on the net?

Whether one agrees or disagrees with the Hillary Clintons or Cindy Sheehans of this world the invective that is often generated can only be described as horrific. To then couple it to a denounciation of anyone else insulting YOUR favourite, smacks of rank hypocracy.

You either denounce ALL or NONE, you can’t pick and choose.
My post is quite neutral. I ask for opinions I didn’t say Hillary was a genius or an idiot. since we were discussing Hillary then it’s relevant to ask for opinions first.

I’m not forcing Arba Sicula to choose between good or bad. so your last sentence is deceptive.

Do you think asking for opinions is invective?

I can’t agree. We have to be discerning when someone puts themselves forward as a candidate for office. Hiliary Clinton has done so, Laura Bush has not. Taking potshots at a First Lady who has done so much good is nothing but nastiness. Calling Hiliary Clinton to account for her stand on the issues and naming a spade a spade is another matter entirely.
In that case I would respectfully suggest you are putting political allegience before your Catholicism.

The Gospel for yesterday may help you to put that in perspective.

Luke 9: 51-56:blessyou:

As somebody else on this thread stated, this is not about opinions of Hillary Clinton or whatever, it is about how you treat people. The thread basically criticises Bill Maher, now, whether you agree with him or not the question remains does he have a right, either legally or morally, to criticise in the way he does, and, have others, using his same modus operandi; i.e vehement criticism, forfeited their right to criticise him?

How can you connect asking people for opinion and the way I treat people? It’s obvious a non-sequitur. I didn’t bring out the Hillary problem, it’s Arba Sicula. So you can’t blame me for hijacking the thread either. since it’s brought up, it has to be discussed. do you want meaningful discussion or blind accusations?

Arba Sicula:
That question about the opinion of Sen. Clinton was directed at me, and I didn’t respond because I saw it as a gambit for an attack on the Senator. I find her, my Senator, a hardworking Senator who has the respect of most of her collegues and I’ve not been displeased with her representation of us New Yorkers.
Don’t you even have a opinion on Hillary? If you can’t answer my question go ahead and say so, don’t use excuses. You dare bring out the Hillary Clinton issue, now you fear a debate? Why don’t you even dare to express your view? I hope you can answer these questions.

No.

“That’s like Hitler’s dog loved him” btw is not vehement criticism. It is a personal attack and I would say that it verges on slander. Vehement criticism is still legitimate last time I looked. Personal attack and remarks verging on slander are not.

As was pointed out by Scott La France, this thread is not about Sen. Clinton, but about Bill Maher. He was right, so I didn’t and won’t discuss the Senator on this thread from that post on.

How am I not surprised by his comments…

As for comparing the first ladies they were and are on different paths as first ladies. Both women are strong intellgent women who have upheld their marraige vows through the thick of tough times. The difference is that Laura has no wants and nobody is calling her to run for election. Laura plays the mother and wife role. She doesn’t get involved in politics and very rarely gives her own opinion. When she does it is big news (aka…supreme court). Hillary on the other hand has always been seen as a canadiate. She has always spoken her mind and her views were almost as important as her husband. She has gone on to be an ELECTED office holder after her husbands term. Her opinions are of great importance and have a chance of changing policy therfore she can and should be criticized for her positions. She has put herself in that catagory. On the otherhand no one should be attacking her as a person but on her views. Lets give both women credit for being first ladies which is a hard job and lets pray for each.

God Bless,
Beckers
What we are talking about here is two marriages. Basically I see that is none of anyone’s business. People’s careers are seperate from their marriges Laura Bush is a Librarian and in that career she is pretty much out of the political loop. On the other hand Hilliary Clinton is a Lawyer in that career she is very much in the political arena. That Bill Clinton and Hilliary Clinton are members of the same party is irrelvant ( althought I understand that met at a political rally). Hilliary’s opinions are her own as are Laura Bushes.

That being said no one can say anything about the about the strength of the marriages. Indeed the Clinton marriage had a very public show of broken vowes. So far neither marriage has any evidence of broken bones (an all too tragic experience in today’s marriages) and Bill Maher was wrong to imply this.

By the way Laura Bush is a fellow Librarian and I value her opinion on anything. Librarian’s know everything 😃

Actually every post by you in this thread is about Clinton, So you can’t say you want to stick to the topic.

I hold Bill Maher in very low esteem. If he thinks and speaks ill of Laura Bush it is to her credit.
The funny thing is, he thinks of himself as politically incorrect, yet he constantly espouses the banalities which are meat and drink for the mainstream media.

It’s a nice, though transparent trick he tries to pull off by acting as if he is a courageous iconoclast, when in fact his views are very much in lockstep with the MSM and liberal elites that worship at the altar of moral relativism.
