If someone was a Catholic and made a decision to go back to Christ, that person was told to find a Catholic church. Mr. Graham is definitely no “sheep stealer”. He wants people who were lapsed and decide to return to the faith to go back to the church that they were from. He considers Catholics to be true Christians, unlike some other Protestant ministers. My friend said that many people joined my parish as a result of Billy Graham’s Crusade. :amen:

That’s wonderful to hear. I’ve always admired Billy Graham. I went to one of his crusades several years ago, but his son was running it. I was in 7th grade and that’s when I officially started my journey towards the Catholic Church. 👍

I hear some people say that Billy Graham preached a “simple Gospel.”

I think that people need to hear a “simple Gospel” at first. Even Catholics. Especially Catholics.

Catholicism is a HUGE religion! It takes an entire Bible, a giant Catechism, and a Magisterium to explain it all, not to mention the Canon Law and the GIRM and all the other documents from all the Councils. Many people just give up and walk away from the complexity of it all.

I think that Rev. Billy Graham got a lot of these people started back on the road to God and the Catholic Church with his simple message of “Believe in Jesus. Give your life to Him. Accept Him into your life.”

Another piece of evidence that Billy Graham encouraged involvement in the Catholic Church is the book, The Hiding Place, by Corrie Ten Boom, which received major promotion throught Billy Graham Evangelical Association. (I still have my special Crusade edition of the book that my mother received for donating a few dollars to BGEA.)

In this book, when Corrie is finally released from Ravensbruck, she gives her precious Bible to a “saintly Catholic woman.”

And in the movie of the book (also heavily promoted by the BGEA), we see a scene where a woman smuggles a crucifix (not a cross) into Ravensbruck.
 
yes Cat, I think his “sucess” is because he simply did his calling which is evangelist. Its nice to hear everyones statements, it reminds us how “in charge” God really is and things do and work together to bring us all to Him, very encouraging.

the only way to tell is to go and see what he has to say 🙂 the son is not identical to the dad. He had a different path to God then his dad did. He also can relate to some different people than his dad could because of it.

Billy Graham has always kept the message of the gospel very simple. He is calling to people to recognise Jesus as Lord. The councillors there direct those who accept that message to local churches. Thus both Grahams are evangelists;

Eph 4:11-13 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Franklin Graham is doing a great job in the Charity Ministry in Ukraine, and around the world. Our President is very thankful to him for this activity. ( The President delivered his speach of respect and thanksfulness, through his secretary on the Kiev’s stadium) Thanks Kitty Chan. 🙂
 
I hate to be a “party-pooper”, but both Franklin and Billy Graham are heretics.

Somewhere I read that at a Billy Graham Crusade years ago, some staff member put out some anti-Catholic Jack Chick tracts, and when Graham found out about it, he immediately had them pulled and issued an apology. Hmm, now I’ll have to figure out where I read that.

The fact that Billy Graham was trying to search the ways whch could bring the Christians of all denominations more closer, is already very positive fact.
I heard that more than half of the Baptists Churches in Kiev , refused to take part in Evangelization of Franklin Graham , just because of the ecumenical mood of Grahams Mission. ( I am not sure of this information definitely, that’s what I heard from one Baptist Deacon.)

I remember when the Leader of the Baptists Movement Mr.Comendant, who as I think is influenced by the Billy Graham understanding of Christian Unity , when he has called the John Paul Second , by the term - ''Your Holiness ‘’ ,
-many Baptist Churches were alarmed and some even separated from the Union, after that.
I think that to look for the things which make Christians closer is proper understanding of our Christian call.
 
Also , Billy Graham has been called out by some evangelicals for having stated that it is possible for non-christians, who live a life of goodness, to go to heaven through the grace of God(Isn’t this in line with RCC teachings). As a side note, did anyone else read that Ruth Graham never left her Methodist upbringing in all their years of marriage-interesting.

A friend of mine from church (Catholic) was a volunteer at the last Billy Graham crusade in Cleveland. Billy Graham encouraged people who made a decision for Christ and were Catholics to find a Catholic church. My friend prayed with the Catholics and helped them to join my parish. I respect Billy Graham for this.👍

Bellmont Abbey College is a Catholic seminary.

The Catholic Church will recognize anyone as a “Catholic theologian” who holds a degree in theology from a Catholic college and does not teach contrary to the Catholic Faith. You need not actually be Catholic to be recognized as a “Catholic Theologian.”

While Billy Graham preaches Evangelical protestantism, he does not preach against the Catholic Church or preach doctrines which are overtly heretical (at least not heretical enough for the Church to strip him of his recognition).

Therefore, Billy Graham is a “Catholic Theologian” in good standing.

How about that???

Alright I realize that this thread is several years old, but as a Belmont Abbey alumnus I can’t hold my tongue.

Billy Graham received an HONORARY DOCTORATE from Belmont Abbey College, which is a four-year undergraduate liberal arts college. NOT A SEMINARY. There have not been seminarians at the Abbey since the 1960s, and even then, most were monastic seminarians. An Honorary Doctorate does not confer any kind of status as a Catholic theologian, partly because it is not a degree in theology, but also because it is an honorific, and not an actual academic degree. It is considered poor form to call oneself Doctor because he holds an honorary doctorate. Billy Graham is not a “Catholic theologian in good standing.”

Although this reply is directed to me, I won’t respond here because (as you observed) this thread is nearly five years old, and CAF policy (rightly) discourages the resurrection of very old threads. Please feel free to open a new thread on this subject (and cite this thread as background material if you wish). FWIW, you may want to show how Billy Graham has violated Canon 1371 when you make your post.
