After the Vicar General of a Catholic diocese in a Spanish territory in North Africa welcomed a Hindu religious procession involving the deity Ganesh into the local cathedral, with Catholics singing a Marian hymn while looking at the image, the local bishop has apologized, saying the Church has to be “faithful to our Christian tradition,” and the priest has resigned.

Video of the blasphemy can be seen on Crux

For the life of me I can’t imagine how this can happen.

No ecclesial authority felt the need to stop this?

They literally welcomed a demon into a church.

This is what gets me about educated clergy, they obviously know better – how can such a lapse in judgement occur? It’s so obvious, even to the simplest faithful layman, but the educated clergy or theologian is oblivious?

The Church probably should be reconsecrated.

I think “being nice” and “ecumenical” and “interreligious dialog” went off the deep end to allow sacrilege.

Still not sure why we even need to have any sort of joint religious event with Hindus at a church no less.

I’ll only get in trouble if I give my opinion, but let’s just say that this event teaches us a lot.

At least the bishop had the right mind enough to ask his VG for resignation, and the VG did so. That’s more than what occurs in other places.

This is just utterly bizarre. How did this even occur in the first place?

Very confusing for the laity. I didn’t realize there is a Hindu community in
Spain. Were they singing a song about Mary when the statue of this deity was
brought into the church?
I think this is a bad idea.
Did the Bishop have a talk with the priest I hope?

I seem to recall something similar to this happening at Fatima a number of years ago. You might have to google it.

Isn’t this how we got Santeria?

Does the Catholic church do anything to discourage Santeria? I heard it is growing
in California.

Thank goodness the Bishop realized how wrong this is!

The Church condemns such movements.

It is very odd that they would sing a Marian hymn in the presence of a Hindu statue. Apparently the bishop asked the priest to resign as Vicar General.
