I attended St. Mary Cathedral tonight because I could not get to my parish masses this morning. I presumed that it was OK to go back there because Bishop Carlson had mandated the proper matter for communion be used effective in June of this year. The pastor began by providing a lesson on the GIRM, which consisted of him reading a two-year old message from the previous bishop regarding the proper posture for receiving communion. A retired priest said the “mass,” which was the same horrific show they have always put on there, including the obligatory invalid matter. My children and I ducked out the back while the rest of the folks went up to communion. Incidentally, my daughter infomed me that Nouvel, the Saginaw Catholic high school, also has invalid matter at their liturgies. The Nouvel school building adjoins the diocessan offices, and their liturgies take place in the diocessan center. I would have thought that the Bishop could enforce the liturgical guidelines at his cathedral and diocessan center. Apparently that is not the case.
