May God continue to bless Bishop Leibrecht with good health. We thank him for his service to our diocese.
We look forward to our new Bishop. Please pray for him and for us, the faithful of Springfield-Cape Girardeau.

Wow that was a quick decision on the part of the Holy See. God bless Missouri and God bless their new bishop during this transition.

Bishop Leibrecht submitted his resignation approx 2 years ago. The resignation was just accepted with the appointment of our new Bishop.

This looks good as far as I can tell. Southern Missouri is in the Bible Belt, and needs a strong Catholic presence. I’m not sure how it has been, but I haven’t heard *anything *about that diocese. Usually when they’re doing things right, they get some attention. Maybe things will get better.

I think Springfield-Cape Girardeau will be pleased with Fr. Johnston. He is an energetic, extremely bright priest who gets along very well with people. He worked closely with our former Bishop Kurtz. He will be great, I think. May God bless him in his work. He will be missed in Knoxville.

I’m in Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese. I see that Bp-elect Vann Johnston worked with Una Voce to get an Indult Mass established in Knoxville. So I take it the TLM is okay with him, which is nice, because Bp Leibrecht wouldn’t allow it. Perhaps because of that, SSPX is pretty big here, which is a shame. Can you tell me anything more about him Mary Bobo? What I have been able to find on Google seems pretty good, but it’s not very descriptive, really.

Hate to follow myself here, but I’m going to. This is our new bishop we’re talking about here, so I have an excuse. From what I have been able to find, he doesn’t seem a bit intimidated by fundamentalist protestants, and can talk their own language right back with them. I’m guessing that the Knoxville diocese is a whole lot like ours. Overwhelmingly protestant, largely fundamentalist “Bible Belt” kind of place. Hill country. If he likes that kind of country, and it looks like he does, he’s going to like it here too. Looks like he’s an outdoors type, and that’s good too. He even looks like a native. Seems pretty orthodox, but I can’t tell that for sure.

For some reason, I can’t open your links, Wolftracker. Oh well, maybe I can at my office computer tomorrow. Thanks for offering it, though.

Yoho! Finally got through to your link, Wolftracker. He sure looks like what we need here! Have for a long time! Hooooray! And God bless Archbishop Burke who, I am sure, had to have had a hand in this, if not the outright choice!

I wrote to Abp Burke a couple of years ago and asked him, if he had any influence on such things, to help us get a bishop like him and Bishop Finn. I knew in my heart he had to have had the major hand in Bishop Finn’s appointment and would influence what happens here, but I didn’t expect him to respond. St. Louis is a big diocese, and I’m sure he has a lot on his plate. Anyway, to my surprise I received a response, in which he assured me that he did, indeed, have an interest in the appointment in Springfield-Cape Girardeau, and that it was definitely on his mind.

I will go to my grave (probably sometime during Bishop Johnston’s term-he’s a good deal younger than I am) thinking Archbishop Burke is responsible for this appointment. Both we, and you in KC owe him a lot.

You need to do a little more research on this. Bishop Leibrecht is not against the TLM. The first TLM in Springfield is in 3 weeks, thanks to Bishop Leibrecht.

I just learned that elsewhere, and I am surprised. The Indult Mass was allowed and encouraged when? Well, maybe I’m not very surprised since Rome made its will pretty clear recently. But before that, Bp Leibrecht himself said he would never allow it, and, until now, kept his word. One TLM in his entire tenure, less than two months before his successor’s consecration; a successor who appears to be friendly toward Una Voce, is not exactly what I think of as openness to it. Una Voce Springfield (Don’t worry, I’m not a member. I don’t even know any of them.) has begged him for it for years and met a stone wall.

If Una Voce is the same group that has been harassing Fr. Dennis at St. Joseph’s, then I can understand why they have been stone-walled. That group should be ashamed of themselves for their tactics. The reason it has taken so long for the TLM to reach us here has more to do with logistics than anything.

I am not going to get into a discussion about it, but anyone that is going to disparage a group like Una Voce Springfield (a group with which I have NO affiliation) should have their facts in order prior to sullying their good name.

Bishop L. adamantly resisted the TLM for over two decades and has only allowed a TLM to be celebrated since the motu proprio came into effect last September. This is so well known, I am surprised anyone would try to say otherwise. In fact, when a letter of courtesy was sent to the bishop upon the founding of UVS, he replied that he would not allow the TLM. They were surprised by this response since the letter had not asked for it, only had informed him of their formation.

Notice the word “IF”
Maybe others should research why Bishop Leibrecht didn’t allow the TLM until the motu proprio before sullying HIS good name.

I did not sully the bishop’s name. I stated an observable fact: he did not allow the TLM until the motu propio, despite JPII’s call that bishops “widely and generously” allow it.

Where? This is the first I’ve heard of this.

On first glance, this sounds like a great appointment. God bless him as he takes over our diocese.
