Bishop D'Arcy says Notre Dame must answer for honoring Obama [CNA]

Fort Wayne, Ind., Aug 25, 2009 / 11:35 am (CNA).- Bishop John M. D’Arcy, whose diocese encompasses the University of Notre Dame, is not letting the issues raised by the university’s honoring of President Obama lie dormant. Instead, the Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend has penned a poignant article for the upcoming edition of America magazine that calls on the renowned university to evaluate the consequences of its failure to respect the authority of the bishops.

I’m shocked. Not at what the Bishop says but that America magazine would print this article.

Bishop D’Arcy has obviously taken the time to sift through what has been going on. His reference to 1967 was surprising and not so surprising. At that time, it appears some in the Church, for reasons not entirely clear, began to hear the world more than the Holy Spirit. By 1970, some religious left the Church.

If any Catholic University cannot answer the questions he poses, why remain Catholic? On the other hand, because he is the Bishop, he should continue in a spirit of truth, love and reconciliation, and especially, hope. I believe the Lord will answer his prayers and the Holy Spirit will move on the leadership of Notre Dame.

Now I understand. America magazine would likely not have been willing to accept an article critical of a Jesuit university’s failure to respect its own bishop, without providing an opposing viewpoint against the bishop!

How richly ironic! No shepherd can be a shepherd in his own diocese if there is a Catholic university involved! After all, they are the 2nd magisterium, arent’ they?

Am I misunderstanding you? Are you saying that Notre Dame is a Jesuit university? It’s not. ND is a Holy Cross university. America Magazine is Jesuit.

I’m finding the bishop’s statement weak in its closing remarks. I believe that the questions have to be more direct. The questions are very scholarly. But when you’re writing to a group of scholars, such as the university administration and Board of Trustees, you’re leaving wiggle room for a diplomatic response that says very little and sounds very good.

Bishop D’Arcy asks this: “Finally, a more fundamental question: Where will the great Catholic universities search for a guiding light in the years ahead? Will it be the Land O’Lakes Statement or Ex Corde Ecclesiae?”

The Land O’Lakes Statement was pretty much a declaration of independence of the magisterium for Catholic academia. It seems that the Notre Dame administration has already answered this question, at least for itself.

Yep…we have one out here too… University of Portland. We have a Holy Cross priest from UofP celebrate Mass at our parish once or twice a quarter. Father Charlie (Gordon…one of the Theology Asst Professors) is my daughter’s favorite visiting priest.

EDIT ADD: Is Fr. Charlie “liberal?” Possibly, but not in an in-your-face way that anyone would notice and/or find offensive. I don’t even think about it or care. He is a very good homilist who has a very loving persona. When he celebrates our Latin OF Mass, he doesn’t seem to know/pray the Latin prayers, but that isn’t unusual for visiting priests. At least he doesn’t ask us all to join hands for the Our Father like the recent Maryknoll priest who visited from Peru. Our altar boys looked at him with a “you want us to do what?” look on their faces.
