I don’t know his innocence or guilt which is why I’ll pray for him. I’m just a bit shell shocked. Certainly there are priests (and bishops, bishop elects, ex Cardinals etc) who are and were guilty of abuse; there are also those out there who are and were innocent. I’m just saying that in today’s climate the attitude is far more a presumption of guilt than that of innocence. It’s a shame that in a well-intentioned, and even praiseworthy, effort to do good (whether it’s to combat sex abuse, racism, or whatever) the pendulum is swinging so far in order to root out ‘evil’ that innocents are being harmed in the name of pursuit of good. In time hopefully things will adjust to make it more likely that neither will the good be punished, nor the evil escape, but right now we’re in an extremist phase.
