I am a huge fan. I am proud that he served as Bishop in my Diocese if for but a short time. Things have slowly gone south (or I should say left) since he was transferred.

But my favorite story was when he was on an airplane ( and I will relay this very loosely - maybe someone who has heard this can sharpen up my details).
It was a a Friday and the airline attendant was passing out a meal. Bishop Sheen told the attendant he was going to skip the meal ( as he was fasting.) Bishop noticed a person sitting close by also declined the meal. He asked the other passenger if they were also Catholic and fasting. The passenger responded that, yes, he was fasting, but was a Satanist ( or related cult) and was fasting to increase abortions.

Chilling - and I probably relayed the story poorly.

The writing desk of Bishop Fulton Sheen is in the office of a nearby church. Sometime, if I have a chance I’ll snap a pic of it and post it.

I just love Bishop Sheen. I had the privilege of meeting him briefly, when he was the Bishop of the Rochester diocese. I was in my “mispent youth” at the time, but I was asked if I would like to hear him speak. So I attended mass with a family friend.
Afterwards, she somehow got his attention, & the next thing I knew, a priest was leading me over to him. (Remember, I am not even Catholic, & at this point, I was barely even Christian at all, except nominally). He spoke very briefly to me. I was blown away. I tell people that, as far as I am concerned, I knew he was a saint right then!! Holiness just seemed to be all around him.
Anyhow, later that same week, I got a HUGE box from the Rochester diocese. I was like, “What is  this???” When I opened it, he had sent me copies of all his books!! I really think that reading them is one of the reasons that I straightened myself up, & started working at Christianity again. If he had tried to convert me or something, I would have rebelled!! But he sent BOOKS!! I LOVE to read!!! So I read them all, over & over again!
What a great man…I think maybe I need to get that stack of books out…I would love to read them again. Especially “The World’s First Love”, which is a wonderful, wonderful book about the Virgin Mary! If any of you haven’t read it, you seriously do not know what you have missed!!!
(And I still don’t know how he knew where to send them to me!! Maybe our friend gave him the address???)

I remember watching the original television broadcasts with my Dad. It was live, real time B&W TV - very cool by today’s standards. My father was no Catholic, but he had a deep appreciation for Fulton Sheen. It stuck with me. Later on when I began to investigate Catholicism this is one of the things I was able to make reference to.

Cool! Please do!
Am I the only one who is green 😃 with envy of Zooey for having met this sainted man of God? In watching him on tv and reading his quotes I feel like I should’ve known him.

Hey Zooey! Ever think it might all have been a very serious hint from the Holy Spirit as to where you belong? 🙂
Pax vobiscum,

VERY Cool Zooey. The Holy Spirit had designs on you back then and used Bishop Sheen.

My favorite ArchBishop Sheen story.

He once had a speaking engagement in Philadelphia. He left the hotel early to allow time to walk about the city before showing up at the Town Hall for his speech. After a while it became clear to him that he had lost his way. He saw a group of children playing by the side of the road. Approaching them he said, “I am a stranger in your town, and I seem to have lost my way. Can any of you tell me how to get to the Town Hall?” Finally, one young boy volunteered and gave him the directions the Bishop needed. After that the boy asked, “What are you going to do there?” “I’m going to deliver a lecture.” “On what?” “On how to get to heaven.” “To heaven?” the young boy exclaimed. “You don’t even know how to get to the Town Hall.”

Ok here it is. Supposedly this is the writing desk used by Bishop Fulton Sheen in Rochester, NY. It is in the Church offices of St. Mary Church Geneseo, NY. I was told this was Bishop Fulton Sheen’s. I can’t tell you anything beyond this. It currently is being used by the music minister of St. Mary Geneseo. I have two views. This is view one. I placed my copy of Life of Christ on top of the desk. 😃
I am submitting the larger picture rather than smaller.

I have no documents to prove that Bishop Fulton Sheen used this desk. I have only word of mouth from parish workers. It is a very modest desk.

I’m happy to say that as a Teen I met him once in Willoughby’s (camera and electronics) in NY. He was buying a shortwave receiver. When my mother heard she was very upset that I got no autograph, so I wrote and asked for one. (SASE). He graciously responded with “God love you, Fulton J Sheeen”

It’s just above my desk as I write.

Thanks for the pictures Contemplative. I wonder how we could get some provenance? I think it would be great to have met him. It might’ve changed my whole life. I know he has in some ways already, just from seeing him on tv and from some of his quotes.

Hey all!
What is your personal favorite quote of Bishop Sheen’s, and why? I’ve already posted mine in about post # 10 up top.

I’m not sure how I should go about it. The word in the parish office is that this was Bishop Sheen’s desk. I don’t much like it being used the way it is but that is just my opinion. What more can I do?

I wonder if he was his true self on TV. Was he much different when not behind a camera?

Dominus vobiscum,

I don’t have any particular quotes. I read Lift Up Your Heart when I was an adolescent. Reading this book forever changed my life. Fulton Sheen described letting go of the Ego & I to reach the Divine. This made sense to me and changed my life.
