Doctrinal head: Openly gay priests make it tough to represent Christ

Catholic News Service

ROME (CNS) – Cardinal-designate William J. Levada said a priest who publicly announces he is homosexual makes it difficult for people to see the priest as representing Christ, the bridegroom of his bride, the church.

A public declaration of homosexuality places a priest “at odds with the spousal character of love as revealed by God and imaged in humanity,” said the U.S. cardinal-designate, who is prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Bishop Gumbleton wrote an article regarding the devotion a homosexual can have to the job in America Magazine I shall post a link from an article where a counsellor discusses both his and Msgr. Baker’s viewpoints:

“Homosexual men can no doubt be perfectly continent, but the charism of celibacy involves more; peaceful chastity and the sublimation of sexual energy into priestly service for the kingdom’s sake” [emphasis added]. Gumbleton reflects on his own sexuality as a heterosexual person—how he had to learn to integrate his own sexuality in all of his loving relationships, while remaining a truly celibate person: “as Grisez puts it, I arrive at a point of ‘peaceful chastity and the sublimation of sexual energy into priestly service for the kingdom’s sake.’ ”

The differecne is Levada is taking about an openly homosexual Priest while Gumbleton is taking about a celibate priest with SSA -HUGE difference.

Levada’s statement is very good. I do not trust Gumbleton’s statements- his history of confirming homosexuals in their sin doesn’t give him a lot of credibility in this subject.

Thank goodness. I was worried about Levada…being former Archbishop of San Francisco and all that. But this is a good sign.

You may not trust Gumbleton’s views, but he is certainly qualified in giving them, he is a Doctor of both Canon Law and Divinity - I only just found that out 😛

Well that’s a shame. If he’s been given much, more is expected of him. Doesn’t matter how many degree he has. What count are his thought and action.

I think he delivers, and often his deliveries are display profound intelligent thought, it is just that people don’t like what he says - that is where the problem lies. 🙂

Credentials do not ensure orthodoxy or faithfulness to the truth.

You think. Not the Church and Catholics who KNOW HER know that Gumbleton has a twisted view.

So basically, the Vatican wants it both ways, it wants to enact a contreversial policy without incuring any contreversial results.

The ban on gay priets hits the very heart of those who are gay and serving as so. From what I understand, a person who feels deepseated attractions to the same-sex is not fit to be a good priest. What does this say to the priests who are homosexual? That all along their ministry has been flawed. Its a slap in the face to the many priests who have served dedicated ministries. They should make their sexuality public, maybe then the Church can see how many gay priests it actually has, and how it doesn’t stop any of them from representing Christ.
