San Francisco Archbishop Levada is rumored to be the new head of the Congregation For The Doctrine of the Faith.

Press here in the Bay Area is surprised and relatively pleased. While no means liberal he is seen as much more moderatee than Ratzinger and has allowed basically anything to go in his more than 10 years as head of this Archdiocese. The church here, in terms of doctrinal discipline, is a disaster - friendship blessing are not uncommon, orthodox folks are hardly tolerated nad the Bishop seems to not care. Evangelization efforts - resources for them - have been basically eliminated in exchange for spending those resources on politically correct things like the sanctuary movement and such.

I think he is a wrong choice but maybe some are right and Bebedict will turn out less orthodox than John-Paul was.

I’m worried to hear of Levada’s appointment. he played along with TPTB in SF on some key issues. When the City wanted to provide benefits for gay couples Levada agreed to not oppose that as long as the benefits were extended to any couples living together. Male/male or male/female. That occured about 8 years ago and after his “compromise” I lost total respect for him as a Church leader.

Though I would of preferred that BXVI had chosen Archbishop Raymond Burke or even Cardinals Francis George or Justin Rigali, but I think most of us can count our blessings it wasn’t Cardinal Roger Mahony…

It sounds like Bishop Levada is not to far from Cardinal Mahoney.

Just think, though. If the bishop is right there under the thumb, so to speak, of the Pope, doesn’t it make sense that the Pope would choose someone who is known to be neither extreme, if anything tending more toward a position slightly “left”? No one will whimper that all the bad ol’ are ganging up on the poor ol’ , and the cleanup will start at the farthest end, so to speak, of the source of the discontent.

After all, Jesus came to call, not the righteous, but sinners. Looks like Benedict is calling the more “equivocal” in the AmCath to his side first. . .actually, a hopeful sign IMO.

Does anyone know what the timeframe for filling this important position is? I thought I read somewhere it would probably tke about 3 months but I am not sure.

My .02 - Levada will never be appointed to this post. I don’t see how he helps complete the legacy of JP II, which is the path Benedict XVI is on…

A note here: The Vatican was denying the rumour that Archop Lavada had been appointed to CDF as of this morning.

APPOINTMENT OF ARCHBISHOP LEVADA TO THE CDF “JUST A RUMOR” OFFICIAL SAY

**SAN FRANCISCO, USA, May 12 (CNA) - The spokesman for the Archdiocese of San Francisco dismissed as “rumors” recent reports announcing that Archbishop William Joseph Levada was about to be appointed as the new Prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Mr. Maurice Healy, spokesman for the San Francisco diocese, dismissed the speculation as rumor, telling the Associated Press that the recent meeting between the Archbishop and Pope Benedict XVI was just a “courtesy call.”

Time magazine reported Tuesday that Benedict already had asked Archbishop William Levada of San Francisco, a doctrinal expert, if he were interested in leading the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith.

Last week, both The Oregonian and Religion News Service reported on Benedict’s meeting with Levada and speculated that he was a contender for the job.

But Time magazine also quoted an unidentified senior Vatican official as saying that if Levada isn’t appointed, “it means somebody got to (the Pope) and convinced him to change his mind.”

As a priest, Archbishop Levada joined the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 1976 and served for six years, leaving shortly after the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger took over as Prefect in 1981.

Levada, a friend of Pope Benedict, is since 2000 one of the five bishops serving on the Congregation’s board.

The Archbishop was also a leading figure in drafting the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Levada, 68, has been Archbishop of San Francisco since 1995; after serving as the Archbishop of Portland, Ore.

Don’t jump to conclusions. You haven’t been around him.

It would appear there are a lot of things you don’t see.

Have you seen San Francisco’s cathedral?

Take a look at it…it looks like the agitator inside a clothes washing machine. I hear that some in San Francisco refer to the cathedral as Our Lady of Maytag.

I know Levada didn’t build this, but if he’s worth his salt he has to be embarassed by this travesty of modern architecture.

What in the heck does architectural tastes have to do with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith? If we are going to prejudge the man, let us do it for something righteous, like being from California.😃

An interesting reaction; it would appear that you know next to absolutely nothing about him.
What’s to know?
  1. Forbids the TLM Indult in his diocese.
  2. His diocese, on his watch, now pays benefits to homosexual “spouses”.
  3. Has been accused and successfully sued for protecting pedophile priests and punishing whistleblowers.
If I am wrong, please correct me. I have been attacked all day for pointing out these things, but absolutely no one has refuted any one of these assertions. I would love to be proven wrong and know that a wonderful, holy, orthodox man now heads the CDF. I have never heard of Bishop Laveda before this announcement. However, I found pages and pages of documentation to support the above assertions with a 30 second Google search. His talk in support of the faith is outstanding, but his actions leave much to be desired if what I have read is true.

You’re right, I didn’t. Up until now I had only heard the “bad” things. Our Holy Father knows what he’s doing and the best way to guide the Church. That’s why he’s pope (and not me!)

There have been some interesting discussions on these boards on this subject.

From the link to the Cathedral’s website: The design for the new cathedral had to reflect San Francisco’s greatness

Wow, I guess they don’t think very much of themselves.
