We still use the altar rail at our cathedral here in Vancouver. I don’t think it ever went away. It’s an odd anomaly in North America. He should also encourage the return of the communion rail.![]()
I chant at several parishes around Sherbrooke, Quebec and there are still quite a few parishes that have them. Not that they are always used mind you. The cathedral is one of them (built in the 50’s with a free-standing altar as well; the tabernacle is in a side chapel). Saint Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal still has it in the crypt church, and is very much used as intended. We still use the altar rail at our cathedral here in Vancouver. I don’t think it ever went away.
