So I am curious. If a bishop is not allowed to add a gesture to the GIRM, as in holding hands for the Our Father, how can he add this? I believe the word Cardinal Arinze used was “proscribing.” I would expect that in such a case where one bishop started mandating something apart from the rest of the USCCB, we would get a similar response to that we did when some were refused communion on the tongue while kneeling. It took a directive from the Congregation for Sacred Liturgy to remind them that an individual had a right to choose to receive kneeling.

I am not too concerned, as there is no link in the article. This could as easily be rumor as a reality.

You communion rail enthusiasts would love the ’ vintage’ rails and gates in the old Churches here.

But what does an ageing Priest do when he cannot bend down to give the Body or Blood of Christ to a kneeler?

We still use the altar rail at our cathedral here in Vancouver. I don’t think it ever went away. It’s an odd anomaly in North America.
I chant at several parishes around Sherbrooke, Quebec and there are still quite a few parishes that have them. Not that they are always used mind you. The cathedral is one of them (built in the 50’s with a free-standing altar as well; the tabernacle is in a side chapel). Saint Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal still has it in the crypt church, and is very much used as intended.

I would kneel for Communion if there was a rail or kneeler set up because to do so in any parish of my diocese, I would not be able to get back up to my feet. I do kneel at the rail when I go to TLMs as that is the norm, and I’ve seen priests come after all have received Communion to give to those who are unable to make it to the rail and stand to receive (example the elderly and/or disabled)
