I have to say that when I hear bishops and cardinals decrying homosexuality in the priesthood, I’m not sure I can trust or believe them. We had, for instance, Cardinal O’Brien in Scotland who always preached a conservative, hard-line message about homosexuals turn out to be an active one himself. In another thread a poster evoked a real manly, flirty married man in her workplace that turned out to be gay. I’ve seen in my own surroundings stridently anti-homosexual males who turned out to be gay themselves. I’ve read about at least one Protestant anti-gay pastor who himself turned out to be seeking the services of male prostitutes.
So I just don’t know what to think anymore when I hear priests, bishops and cardinals (or anyone for that matter) railing against homosexuality. Until I see real action against immoral sexual behaviour in the Church, I’m just going to buck up, put my head down, stick it in my breviary, and pray for all of us, and seek the help of the sacraments which, being the manifestation of Christ Himself, are way above this swamp.
There will always be sexual deviants in the Church just as there are in schools, sports coaches, and families even. But the culture of cover-up and protection has got to go. People in the pews want swift and effective action, not words, not apologies, not crocodile tears.
