Dom Frei Luis Flávio Cappio, Franciscan bishop of Barra (Bahia state) started his 4th day of hunger strike to prevent the government in Brasilia from modifying the course of the river Sao Francisco to irrigate the arid northeastern part of the country. “The bishop is calm” said sociologist Adriano Martins, volunteer in the dioceses of Cabrobó, to MISNA, where monsignor Cappio is located.

The bishop “celebrated mass and has received a tribe of Indios coming to thank him for his protest. Bishops from nearby dioceses are also coming in solidarity. I would like to stress that the Brazilian Episcopal Commission has sent a letter to president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to stop the government project to deviate the course of the river,” said the sociologist. He noted that there would be a great social damage should the plan proceed. But there could also be political damage to the government, he noted: “Brasilia risks to pursue the politics of the previous administration of Enrique Cardoso, who changed the courseof rivers to irrigate the properties of rich fazendeiros, favoring those who produced export crops in particular”.

In the next few days, from Saturday, “environmentalists, bishops and Catholics, representatives of many cities in Brazil, indigenous tribes and others are expected to come to Cabrobo”.
