Further with respect to your emotional disturbance so great it would be hard to take the Eucharist,

Again, why would such a letter disturb you so? Please read it and state what was so controversial or where you disagreed.

Lisa
I didn’t have an emotional disturbance.

The original article posted by the OP was grossly misleading. I apologize for my contribution to the chaos, but I was going off the information I had. Reading something like this letter (thecatholicpost.com/post/PostArticle.aspx?ID=2656) after the Liturgy of the Eucharist is not unheard of, and the original article said that Obama’s name was mentioned. I’ll refrain from blaming the OP for this misunderstanding, but I was reacting to the misinformation I was given, right before I was going to bed as it happened. I’ve now found and read the article, and it’s perfect. Perfect.

Would you not think that a candidate’s religion could be a detriment to his or her election for some groups at least? E.g. Seventh Day Adventism, which openly declares its anti-Catholicism? But, that’s only my personal opinion.
How could a Seventh Day Adventist’s upbringing be any worse than that of someone who sat in Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s church for two decades? That ‘minister’ preached in accordance with the tenets of black liberation theology (anti-white). He condemned America on several occasions.

The candidate’s religion can certainly be a disqualifier with particular groups, but apparently many Evangelicals and Catholics find a Mormon suitable. And the Church considers Mormonism a cult! Most Americans had no problem with Obama’s church, so go figure.

Where’s the anti-Mormon bigotry? The do believe that Jesus and Satan were or are brothers, that God is married, and has sexual relations, and that all men wil become gods in their own universes. That is not bigotry. I’m not knocking them - it is part of their doctrine! Among a lot of things that Catholics,IMO at least, ought not accept. 🤷
OK you convinced me. I wont vote for Romney for Pope:)

I provided the full link to the article without approving or condoning the author’s statements. I did not print out the full letter, just a link for people here to read further. I personally have no problem with a Bishop requiring parishioners to consider the Church’s position when comparing candidate’s positions on issues. If I had my druthers, I wouldn’t mind the Bishops telling Catholics to vote for Romney (but that’s the partisan side of me!). I say that without suggesting its proper - simply partisanship at its best! 🙂

Sure. That’s why we made such a fuss about Obama’s hate fueled religious upbringing.

The left told us we were being silly though, so I guess religion isn’t of consequence to them. This would naturally then include Mormonism.

We are voting for a president, someone who will lead,Romney’s religion is of little consequence re this issue. Obama sat in a church for over 20 years, listening to an anti American pastor, didn’t seem to get in the way of him being elected.🤷
Bolding Mine

Indeed. Not only an anti American Pastor, but a church where
the** Muslim Louis Farrakhan, the** anti Caucasian** and** Anti** Jew Racist was a frequent guest speaker **and **given an Award:eek: by the said Pastor. I **will **give links for those that ask.

Really! What more* needs* to be said?🤷

Seriously… Who can believe anything that the Liberals say anymore? They (Liberals) have even deluded themselves even. Some even actually think the HHS mandate temporary compromise no longer violates the Conscience of Holy Mother Church!

I ask. ***How ***can one reason with such?🤷

Of course this is just IMHO… However it seems **obvious **to me.

Err. You didn’t answer my hypotheticals. IMO again, there are religious faiths that are sufficienty anti-Catholic to warrant a Catholic’s thinking twice before backing the candidate. As a staunch GOP partisan, you naturally assumed that I meant Romney, but it was SDA that I used as a possible example… 🤷
Again, what in Romney’s past actions, his varied successes in different realms would lead you to believe his Mormon faith was somehow negatively impacting his ability to be President of the United States? I agree some of the Mormon faith looks a bit strange from out here in the cheap seats. I’m not into white salamanders or golden plates. OTOH having lived in SLC for three years, having had a couple of Mormon converts in my family and from working with Mormons I have nothing but good things to say about their PERFORMANCE at their work and their good hearted charity toward their fellow man.

What someone believes, however far fetched, isn’t relevant unless they act upon that faith in a way that would concern a voter about their ability to run the country. Let’s face it Rich, there are plenty of non-Catholics who think our belief in the Real Presence is tin foil hat stuff. But does that mean the can’t accept us as co-workers, family members, neighbors or leaders?

Religious bigotry really fries my cheese Rich, and being a Catholic I would hope you’d have a little more sensitivity to how irrelevant and erroneous information creates suspicion where none is due.

You focus entirely on Mormons, though I did not even mention the Saints. Partisanship?

My hypothetical went to asking if there were anything in any religion that should deter us from voting for a candidate who follows some particular religion. 🤷

And the Church considers Mormonism a cult!
Indeed it is. There’s enough in print that will back the Church’s assessment of the LDS church as such. E.g. God is married and has marital relations with His wife. Not cultish? Really?

Oh come on Rich. Do you think I’m stupid. You castigated the Mormon faith in the immediately prior post. Somehow this has morphed into a discussion of “any faith.” Oh please. As to partisanship I believe Harry Reid is a Democrat so no reason to conclude a disparagement of LDS meant Republicans only.

Again the point I tried to make was that I really don’t care about a Presidential candidate’s specific religion (other than some kind of wierd human sacrifice cult which might be a non-starter) unless their ACTIONS are indicative of their being swayed by their faith in a manner deterimental to governing the country.

Now we can look at Obama and apply the same standard. His Pastor Wright was a proponent of Black Liberation Theology and it’s evident that Obama was a believer in this viewpoint. To some extent he has followed its socialistic and anti-Semitic philosophy so we can say his actions were influenced by Wright or his BLT approach.

OTOH can you say the same for Romney? If you had not been told he was Mormon would you draw any conclusions about his underwear?

Bishop orders priests to read anti-Obama letter at Sunday sermons
Manya A. Brachear | Chicago Tribune

CHICAGO — Joining the chorus of Roman Catholic clergy in Illinois criticizing President Barack Obama before next week’s election, Peoria Bishop Daniel Jenky ordered priests to read a letter to parishioners on Sunday before the presidential election, explaining that politicians who support abortion rights also reject Jesus.

“By virtue of your vow of obedience to me as your Bishop, I require that this letter be personally read by each celebrating priest at each Weekend Mass,” Jenky wrote in a letter circulated to clergy in the Catholic Diocese of Peoria.

In the letter, Jenky cautions parishioners that Obama and a majority of U.S. senators will not reconsider the mandate that would require employers, including religious groups, to provide free birth control coverage in their health care plans. “This assault upon our religious freedom is simply without precedent in the American political and legal system,” Jenky wrote.

Well, it happened to us this morning at Mass. Our bishop made no bones about it, a Catholic with a well-formed conscience, that is, a conscience that is Catholic first, American second, and (name your political party) third cannot vote for Obama or anyone who stands with the Democrat Party.

He reiterated all of the points that have been made here. The right to life is preimminent, the sanctity of marriage is critical, and the right of conscience is obligatory. Everything else, social justice, the economy, the national debt, job creation, etc… are things we can argue about, but pale in comparison to these three critical issues.

Since the Democrats have demonstrated their commitment to abortion on demand, at taxpayer expense, redefining marriage, embryonic stem cell research, euthanasia, and violation of religious liberty, a conscientious Catholic cannot vote in support of the Democrat Party.

It isn’t your fault. The Democrats themselves have made themselves the enemy of the Catholic Church and all it holds dear.

Does any Mormon temple espouse anything close to Reverend Wright’s hateful preaching at Trinity during the years Obama attended services there?

what issues does the conservative Republican Catholic flout Catholic teaching?
Ishii
When conservative Republican Catholics question whether Democratic Catholics Joe Biden or Nancy Pelosi are Catholics according to Catholic teaching.
