CWR: What prompted you to issue this decree on issues related to same-sex “marriage”?
Bishop Paprocki: These norms regarding same-sex “marriage” and related pastoral issues were prompted by changes in the law and in our culture regarding these issues. Jesus Christ Himself affirmed the privileged place of marriage in human and Christian society by raising it to the dignity of a sacrament. Consequently, the Church has not only the authority, but the serious obligation, to affirm its authentic teaching on marriage and to preserve and foster the sacred value of the married state.
A brave man. Pope Francis’ homily a couple of days ago might have had the brave Bishop in mind.

The same is true for us today, the Pope said. We should expect suffering and even persecution if we follow in the path of the Crucified Christ, but at the same time, we can take comfort in knowing that “God does not abandon his children during the storm.”

Interesting, to say the least. I can’t even remember another time when a policy about denying funeral rites became national news.

Well it’s not often that a Catholic bishop issues a blanket decree stating a segment of the population are definitely not getting Catholic funerals.

He made it pretty clear the necessity. If a segment of the population is attacking a clear teaching of Jesus then the Church that Jesus founded is obligated to defend that teaching.

From the CWR article:
CWR: Have you been surprised at the extensive national media coverage it has received?
Bishop Paprocki: Yes, to the extent that the decree is a rather straightforward application of existing Church teaching and canon law.* The Catholic Church has been very clear for two thousand years that we do not accept same-sex “marriage,” yet many people seem to think that the Church must simply cave in to the popular culture now that same-sex “marriage” has been declared legal in civil law.* From a pastor’s perspective, it is quite troubling to see that so many Catholics have apparently accepted the politically correct view of same-sex “marriage.”* This just shows how much work needs to be done to provide solid formation about the Catholic understanding of marriage.
The bishop also said:
Bishop Paprocki: A lot of people seem to have missed the whole point of the call to repentance and conversion.* They seem to think that the decree is a blanket condemnation of people who are gay and lesbian.* It is not.My decree does not focus on “LGBT people,” but on so-called same-sex “marriage,” which is a public legal status. No one is ever denied the sacraments or Christian burial for simply having a homosexual orientation. Even someone who had entered into a same-sex “marriage” can receive the sacraments and be given ecclesiastical funeral rites if they repent and renounce their “marriage.”

Oh no! The Bishop used the term gay and lesbian and homosexual!

Seriously though, I understand what he’s saying. But I still think Fr James Martin was right in his post about this. Consistency is the key.

Not suprising because the magisterium accepts the mythical “homosexual person” as real. It says so here:
For reason I do not understand I have been shunned by my Bishop, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith(CDF) and the Apostolic Signatura. I consulted a canon lawyer who informed me that if I feel the Apostolic Signatura has not properly responded to my concern I only have recourse to the Holy Father. I asked my Bishop if he would send my appeal to Pope Francis, my Bishop declined but was kind and supplied a mailing address. I have sent my appeal several times to Pope Francis and conclude he has not received it. I asked my Bishop again if he would send my appeal through our Diocese; my Bishop said “The Roman Catholic Diocese of … is not able to forward your(my) communication”. I let my Bishop know I believe his claim untrue; I believe he is not willing to but is able to forward my communication and have heard nothing further.

This is not complicated I understand Same Sex Attraction (SSA) is real a temptation, sinful if dwelled on, and SS behavior real a sin. What I don’t understand is why the Magisterium has accepted the concept of a “homosexual person”. I believe the “homosexual person” a myth presented by an LGBT orthodoxy that demands acceptance of their view with no tolerance of dissent. As far as I know before 1993 the Church had no definition for a “homosexual person”. I believe for good reason.
That darn Magisterium! 😊
