Restructuring of instruction for adults, children in LI diocese prompts some fears of conservative shift

Rockville Centre Bishop William Murphy announced a major shakeup of religious education yesterday that reconfigures the program that produced a generation of lay Catholic leaders, as well as many members of Voice of the Faithful, an activist group that has demanded the bishop’s resignation.

Murphy said the restructuring would “not mean a major change in the content of what we offer, which is the teaching of the Church,” in a column in this week’s diocesan newspaper.

I am enrolled in the adult formation and it needs to be over hauled badly. Students voice complaints about the Church and the teachers never even bother to explain why the Church takes certain positions. It’s disgraceful and they’re sowing the seeds of dissent.

The NY Times has an article on the same topic today. A quote from the end of the article is telling.
Dan Bartley, a chairman of the Long Island chapter of the Voice of the Faithful, a national group formed in response to the priest abuse scandal, said the announcement this week had sent a shock wave through the community of liberals and activists in the diocese. “What I see here is a bishop who intends to encourage a ‘pay, pray and obey’ type of Catholic faith. This is definitely a step backward.”

How come the scandal is mentioned but not all the liberal nonsense the VOTF wants to push forth. VOTF clearly and openly talks about changing the entire Church to fit their agenda. They push and push the Bishop but when he pushes back they are shocked and cry foul throughout the diocese. Many of my friends and all of my Franciscan brothers and sisters do not want any part of what they are offering, especailly in the Pastoral Formation Institute.

Wouldn’t you think that any true Catholic would run for the hills away from any group that critcizes a bishop for wanting to teach the Truth as presented to us by the Magisterium of the Church and the Holy Father, handed down to us from Jesus in the Church that He created?

Pray for this holy bishop and those like him who are trying to teach the truths of our faith as they are called to do as apostles.

Pray also for those who only want to hear their own voices. (CTA, VOTF) Praying and obeying are not dirty words.

Okay, I read both articles, is this supposed to be a bad thing? Seems to me this is a positive thing. I am the RE coordinator for our community and sometimes things DO need an overhaul.

I disagree with the women who are complaining about losing their job because they are women. Sometimes things needed overhauled to become more efficient.

It’s all nonsense. The Sister in charge of our Adult formation was replaced by another Sister. I haven’t heard that mentioned by any of the outspoken dissenters.
