Bishop Richard Lennon, breakaway St. Peter Church in Cleveland at standoff

This is about that church in Cleveland which was closed by the bishop, but many in the parish, including the priest, refused to disband as a congregation.

It’s been a month since the priest and lay leaders of a breakaway Catholic church agreed to meet with Bishop Richard Lennon to discuss the congregation’s unauthorized worshipping.

There’s been no movement from either side, not from the newly formed Community of St. Peter or from Lennon, even though he said last month that there is nothing “more urgent for our diocese than addressing this matter.”

Very sad.

Apparently the breakaway parish continues to hold Mass weekly, drawing standing room only crowds.

Very interesting. I didn’t know that you needed a authorized parish to worship. It seems contrary to church doctrine, tradition and scripture itself (“where 2 or more…”).

There must be more to this story.

I love stories like this. Just analyzing how the story is portrayed in the media is a lesson in itself.

I didn’t know we Catholics need authorization to worship - did you? No more bedside prayers without a diocesan license! Next they’re going to tell us we can’t have a vernacular Bible without a note from a priest!

But Bob Zack, a spokesman for St. Peter’s board of trustees, said the bishop, not Marrone, is responsible for setting up a meeting. “He’s the one supposedly obligated to reach out,” Zack said. “I still think the ball’s back in his court.”

IOW, “catch us if you can”. But if the bishops should reach out on moral issues during an election year…

Oh, so the bishop already ***has ***reached out … with an appropriate warning. See, I knew there was something missing.

350? Wait, you mean a bishop is supposed to keep an entire urban parish open when the congregation is only 350 people on a good day? Ah, so there seems to be a lot more to the story.

I cannot judge this situation since i dont know anything about this group. according to one post commentary, these people are liberals in teh Church and they seem to be quite arrogant.

i dont know who this bishop is and his reputation so i couldnt just jump and comment the situation.

right now this seems to be another scandal and disobedience to the authority of the Church.
