It only works with proper catechesis of the faithful. A lot of people still look at confirmation as a “graduation” from religious education…or that you have to be able to answer oodles of questions about your faith, etc.

People have a hard time seeing it as a sealing with the holy spirit sometimes. At one point there was talk of having a baby confirmed right after baptism, which I believe Bishop Ken was open to, but they decided on 2nd grade as an appropriate time.

So, if you have strong catholic education that goes beyond second grade…then it makes sense to have the sacraments in that order. It’s what the church prescribes after all.

Thats the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration that live at our Cathedral, aka the “Red Nuns” from Mexico.

They certainly have done wonders for the Cathedral community and also Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, which is our specifically Hispanic parish in Sioux Falls

I believe he was a good man too. No one can be everything to all people. I disagreed with him on many many things but for the most part, I respected where he was coming from even if I didn’t agree. I can’t say the same for some of the people who surrounded him.

Like right now in Sioux Falls, Bishop Carlson had to suspend the Teens Encounter Christ retreat program before he left to prevent the diocesean youth director from making changes that weren’t so great at this time. Why? I don’t know the full situation, but as Frommi and Jimmie would like to know, no, the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls is not some perfect Catholic utopia.

There was variance on the sacrament of reconciliaton from parish to parish…I believe with the publication of redemptoris sacrementum this was going to be fixed. Again, Saginaw was not the only place in the United States with this variance.

I would have to agree that there were some staff acting in “Bishop Ken’s” name that were probably doing so in a way that the good Bishop would not have appreciated…and will probably continue to create obstacles for a new bishop. Those are the folks for whom Jesus himself could have been appointed Bishop and they would have had issues (probably a bad comparison…I know theologically that Jesus is still around).

I hope there are vibrant conversations around a variety of issues with a new bishop in town…but I pray people don’t fall into a “we always did it this way” mentality…and I pray that the new bishop doesn’t fall into a “I always did it this way mentality”.

From what I’ve read about Bishop Carlson and from what I’ve seen, his ministry is far from ego-driven. He seems to be a man in love with his ministry and the people he serves. I will continue to pray, not only for Bishop Carlson, but for his staff and for all of us that we can discern the call of the Holy Spirit in doing the work we are called to do. I look forward to seeing the bishop again on Sunday when we celebrate the Rite of Election.

I know this sounds like a stupid question, but I’ve been waiting for Fr. Todd to clarify…Will you Fr. Todd? Respectfully, perhaps this should have been in a PM to Basil rather than out here? Unless, you wanted to give more info?

What is the real deal on the Latin mass availability (either at the cathedral or elsewhere) I think that was th eoriginal question;

and what is the story on the TEC program? Isn’t that a spin off of Cursillo for teens? Can you (or someone) explain that program?

You are sooooo right. We were blessed to have a pastor who, like Bishop Carlson, was so in love with his ministry that all the boys in the parish wanted to grow up to be priests - my son included. He cried and we cried when he was reassigned. I can definitely empathise with the people of Sioux Falls.

Hi, I’m catching up on the posts and will reply with what I know and to what has not been responded to.

1. Carlson gave permission for the Tridentine Rite and it was in full swing to start. His appointment to Saginaw put the skids on it, esp. since Aquila is historically against the old Mass.
2. Carlson whispered the “Deliver us Lord . . .” which is why it looked like he was shocked or caught off guard.
3. The pastor of St. Mary’s Cathedral is a good and kind priest. I am very impressed with him. He jumped through hoops to have a beautiful Installation Mass. He did all Bishop asked for, esp. with having altar linenes, gold plated chalices, gold patens for ciboria, and such.
4. It it true that many (not all) in the congregation sang the Doxology. It is also true that some knelt during the consecration, even though there were no kneelers.
5. I found it awkward for the communicants to bow when the priests presented Our Lord to them for communication. The bowing automatically eliminates communication via tongue as an option.
6. The priests I met were all very kind to me and did not seem incredibly liberal as one would think. They did show demoralization given the state of the diocese – especially the severe and chronic lack of seminarians. I suppose I would, too, if I were to see die what I dedicated my life to!
7. The Cathedral is a beautiful edifice. It has not been destroyed but just gutted. It can easily be restored to its deserved grandeur. There is a parish nearby which may be able to serve as the cathedral, thus saving the diocese the money needed for restoration. This parish (Holy Family I think is the name) is just a few houses down from what was the Bishop’s house before Untener sold it.
8. Untener ordained three priests in the last ten years, while Carlson ordained 33. Just before Carlson was installed there were two seminarians as the third quit. Carlson already has two more who want to study for him. He has doubled the number of seminarians for the diocese in his first day as Bishop!
9. The Adoration Sisters are a rich blessing to the Sioux Falls Diocese. You should petition Carlson to start a Monastery of them in Saginaw. A Discalced Carmelite Convent would be a good thing, too.
10. Throughout the US the Bishops should be confirming at age 12. They agreed to this several years back and should abide by their agreement.

Maybe he will be strong enough to ignore the “example” of his adjoinig diocese… Lansing with Bishop Mengeling, and Detroit with Cardinal Maida… both need to stand up and profess the Truth in ALL things at ALL times.

I’m very interested to hear what the problems you are alleging in the Lansing diocese. I have seen very few abuses here – the main ones were at St. John’s in East Lansing, but those seem to have mostly been cleared up since Bishop Mengling took over. I believe in Brighton you have Father Dan, correct? He was the pastor in Williamston when I attended there, and I never saw him do anything unorthodox.

Why does that eliminate the reception by tongue? Sometimes my children bow rather than genuflect, but then receive by tongue.

Petition wouldn’t be pushy? Do you mean a petition like I’m thinking? As in get signatures in support of this idea?

I would have seconded ekindermann’s queston about this, but I can’t manage to quote it here. Hundreds (thousands?), of us have been bowing and receiving on the tongue ever since the bow was requested several years ago. I’ve never found it difficult, and where intinction is offered that’s the only way one can receive.

Is there a problem here?
