I’m a big San Francisco Giants fan so “bum” always refers to Dodgers. “The Bums” is an old term for Dodgers fans. Since you’re a teacher I figured you already knew, but in my conversations with people my age (22) and younger, I have noted a serious lack of knowledge about literature from any generation.

You’re right, people don’t have to see the other person on a message board. Maybe that would help me if we could. I’m 6’5" 240 lbs, maybe that would help me!

I still disagree with your view of the Episcopal Church; I still maintain it’s a lost and reprobate group and also very dangerous theologically. I do not think all members are lunatics or all are fringe leftists. But I think the trend is exceedingly liberal and off-course with Christ’s Church and orthodoxy for 2,000 years. I think it’s following secularism to an intense degree and suffering attendance numbers for that Bermuda Triangle theological navigation it follows. It’s also resorting to litigation and un-Christian-like lawsuits that are ruining people. In my town and in others I’ve observe through acquantances and friends, people are losing their shorts to TEC. In my town, the vestry and rector are personally be sued AND the disaffected 100 (out of 700!!) TEC liberals who left are suing for the property and school as well. The vestry, rector, and all involved as targets are in a crisis and the stakes are high. The TEC knows they’re getting tremendous financial help while the ACNA folks are struggling financially. It’s like a Reagan-Gorbachev cold war $$$ war, one will be broken, one left standing. That makes me naucious!

As for Jack Kerouac, a uber liberal alcoholic, quasi-Buddhist, discharged from the military, mentally unstable, hippy forefather is not one of my favorite people LOL…not a guy I feel is really compatible with Christianity. He’s a trip, to use a term he might appreciate…

To be clear again, I have not apologized for remarks I’ve made other than the “clean house” remark. That was not followed with a “but”. I think the points I have tried to make about the nature of your statements about my church are valid. I also think they don’t follow the guidelines of discussion on this forum. I have seen you get very frustrated with other people on this board for “putting words” in your mouth, but you are doing it to me. I’m not “victim mongering”–I’m a big boy. This discussion is taking place on a forum where people don’t have to see the people with whom they’re talking, so a certain amount of civility should be followed. I’m happy to have a discussion on those terms.

Despite what you may think I think about you I do admire your veracity.

The irony of this discussion is that you and I are not too far off on our opinions. However, I don’t like the whole blanket statements about the Episcopal Church because I’m a part of that. My parish is a conservative one. When the presiding bishop came for a visit she was challenged publicly on the litigation issue. To be honest I have never seen the pagan stuff you refer to but I’m sure I wouldn’t care for that either. You are obviously closer to a bad situation in your hometown and see some things I don’t. That’s why discussion is good. I think it’s important to know that there are quite a few of us out there that don’t like what’s going on and intend on staying put to try to effect changes. Even if you think it’s a lost cause, there are a lot of us who don’t.

Well there are, as we’ve discussed, people of good will in TEC, some very conservative. I personally don’t see why they stay and I don’t think a few can change the tsunami of liberalism that has been building up over the last 40 years. I don’t think you’re a bad guy, never have. You’re probably a better guy than I am. I’m just a lowly teacher and father of three. A simple guy in some ways, too complicated in others. I know that some Episcopal dioceses and parishes feel, as a friend on here put it to me, like the men of Rohan preparing Helm’s Deep before the Uruks come to storm the fortress, outnumbered. Maybe you’re like the Spartans and other Greeks at Thermopylae digging in your heels against the Persians and Schiori is Xerxes. I don’t know. When I insult the liberal theology and wayward sad course of a once-proud denomination in TEC, I do not insult individual, more orthodox, caring, traditional, intelligent members who give a dang. You’re not worshipping totem polls or praying with Hindus or helping to build the Shinto shrine or “Christa” female Jesus statue. But you’re in a denomination that condones that theology and praxis. You’re not guilty for it AT ALL but you’re in a group that does. Some of your money goes to those folks and you’re tied to them as an institution. And over time, and this is just my feeling, more of the Mark Lawrences of the world are finally going to bail and see the light and more and more the castle will be stormed by the Uruks.

I chose to flee the castle, regroup with Rohan and Gondor at Minas Tirith and kick some Orc butt LOL

I think the frustration with me is that I really thoroughly enjoy my parish life. The reality of it is that I am just as outraged when I read some of the craziness that goes on in my own church, as I’m sure you are. I have the feeling that this can’t last and the course will be corrected. If it ends up falling apart, those of us that are like me and still around will pick up the peices. I pray for those in the situations you refereced earlier. I hope they find the support they need. I pray that the next convention will bring changes or reversal of some of the current views in the church. Until then I will continue to be the best conservative Episcopalian I can be. As I have said before, my views can be summed up best in the Nicene Creed. I’ll keep it simple and stick to that.

I wish you well and I wish TEC would repent, reform, and return to Anglican orthodoxy (although as GKC points out, orthodoxy in Anglicanism can be a bit nebulus lol). You have a sincere heart and a desire to see change. We’ll see. The Catholic Church has plenty of demons to exorcise right now as well…there are bats in the belfrey

I miss him because he was a calm, collected, intellectual, well-traveled, insightful conservative and not the Rush, Hannity type talking points big mouths. Buckley was a suave gentlemanly type with a scholarship and methodical way about him unlike this crazy “you betcha” conservatism. I miss him, too.
