It was announced this morning that Bishop Philip Tartaglia of Paisley, 61, will succeed Archbishop Mario Conti as Archbishop of Glasgow, where the bulk of Scotland’s Catholic’s reside.

The new Archbishop-elect said: “I am conscious of the historic place of the Archdiocese of Glasgow in the history of Christianity in Scotland and of its importance for the Catholic community in particular. It is a great honour for me to be appointed Archbishop of my native city and diocese.”

Glasgow-born Bishop Tartaglia became bishop of Paisley in 2005. His predecessor Bishop Emeritus John Mone co-consecrated at his Episcopal ordination alongside Archbishop (now Cardinal) Raymond Burke of St Louis, Missouri. The Episcopal installation of Archbishop-elect Tartaglia will take place on September 8 at St Andrew’s Cathedral in Glasgow.
