Bishop Tartaglia of Paisley on need to fight for Christian freedom

Scottish bishop warns parishioners of dangers of oppression of religious freedom as part of his recent homily at the Mass of Thanksgiving for the 25th Anniversary of St Charles’ Church, Paisley.

The basic rights of Christians ‘to worship freely and to organise the life of the church without the unwarranted intrusion of the state; to celebrate and support Christian marriage and family life and freely to raise the question of God convincingly in new ways’, he said, must not be undermined.

We definitely do need to be more vigilant in protecting our right to freedom of worship. The rise of secularism comes with it the potential for persecution and the lessening of religious freedom.
 
Don’t get excited. I am refering to more programs like EWTN and school education etc…
 
Bishop Tartaglia is an excellent Bishop. Young (by Bishop standards - hes about 60, I think), motivated, bold and eloquent, he speaks out regularly and well on behalf of the Catholic community.

It is widely considered he will become the Archbishop of Glasgow, once Mario Conti retires. ++ Conti has received wide criticism for various things, notably being accused of undermining the Pope’s statements about the Latin mass, via suppressing it in his Archdiocese.

Nevertheless, ++ Conti worked to have St Andrew’s Cathedral (Glasgow) wonderfully refurbished, and a beautiful memorial garden to the Arandora Star* disaster built onto it.

(*This was a cruise liner, which was carrying interned Catholic Scots-Italians, (UK citizens), and POWs from Scotland to captivity in Canada during WW2; it was torpedoed by a German U-Boat - which obviously didnt know what it was carrying - and sank in about half an hour. Something like 800 people drowned).

The memorial garden is very nice. Many gifts were sent by Catholics in Italy to decorate it, including a 200 year old olive tree.

So ++ Conti does have a reasonable legacy, but I think +Tartaglia will be more effective and popular, when (if) he takes the role.

Indeed, if I was a betting man, I would not bet against Cardinal Tartaglia one day!
