PROVIDENCE — Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas J. Tobin said Monday he rejected an invitation this past weekend to attend Governor-elect Gina Raimondo’s inauguration, because of her stance on “the grave moral evil” of abortion.
“Over the weekend I did receive a formal written invitation to the Inauguration, the courtesy of which I appreciated,” Tobin wrote in an email Monday night in response to a Providence Journal inquiry.
“However, as previously announced I will be offering Holy Mass at the Cathedral at that same time to ask for God’s blessings upon our state and nation and our public servants.

As advertised, there is a poll on the newspaper website, which is currently skewed to “Yes” by 74%. Why don’t we try to move that number in the right direction?

I’ve developed a high opinion of Bishop Tobin ever since the October Synod.

This is how bishops should behave. This is not how some bishops do behave.

Jesus ate with tax collectors and prostitutes.

The Bishop put created a mental block for the possibility of the new governors conversion.

The Roman Catholic preparatory school that Treasurer Gina Raimondo attended has removed a portrait of her following comments she made at Planned Parenthood that aren’t in line with the school’s teachings, a school spokesman said Friday.
La Salle Academy President Thomas Gerrow decided to have the picture taken down from a wall in the school’s main building that displays other notable alumni, according to spokesman Drew Lagace. It was taken down Thursday, the day the Democratic gubernatorial nominee spoke in support of abortion rights and “reproductive freedom.”
Lost in all of these stories is that sometimes, what is needed is tough love.

👍

Good for the Bishop, good for the La Salle Academy!:clapping::yup:

The bishop didn’t say that he wouldn’t have dinner with the new governor. He didn’t say that he wouldn’t speak to her. He said that he wouldn’t attend her inauguration because it is a bad thing that she is governor given her profession of faith that is totally discordant with her pro-abortion politics.

The whole “eating with prostitutes” argument might be the single-most overused one in contemporary Christian discourse. Just because our Lord entertained sinners doesn’t mean that we should fete their departures from the moral law, whether at parades or inaugurations. Christ didn’t shun sinners, but he didn’t stand outside brothels applauding every John that entered. Genuine outreach requires honesty and authenticity, and pretending that Raimondo’s election is a good thing is neither honest nor authentic

Speaking of Bishops taking action, I was happy (and quite surprised) to read that Archbp Cupich will be participating in Chicago’s upcoming March for Life:

Attending the inauguration isn’t akin to standing outside a brothel and applauding.

The mission of the Church is to bring the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ to sinners.

The Bishop’s action in this regard is contrary to that mission.

Sorry, I missed the part about where the Bishop would have been given an opporuntiy to preach.

Could you highlight where the article stated that he was to be given the podium to spread the good news.

Jesus didn’t attend any Roman or Jewish political/civil events. They were the political leaders of his day, had policies contrary to the Faith, and were definitely sinners that needed Him. How is this different?

Most often, we preach through our actions, not with our words.

He didn’t attend such things because he was of the peasant class and wouldn’t have been invited in the first place.

However, he did have supper at a tax collectors house.

I’m not talking about invitations, I’m talking about public, political/civil events of any kind.

The tax collector example is what I’m getting, Jesus had supper with him, a private meeting, He did not attend the man’s official events, or installation, etc. Same with the Roman soldiers, and Pharisees, He interacted with them privately, not in a public official way.
