Despite canonical doubts over the legitimacy of the manner in which the translation of antiphons was handed over to the Holy See, the USCCB has voted overwhelmingly to approve the new English Mass translation.
Prior to the vote, Bishop Donld Trautman had the bishops tied up in knots over whether their president, Cardinal Francis George, broke church law when he gave a Vatican office permission to finish one set of English translations without the U.S. bishops’ approval, the Post-Gazette reports.
In an effort to speed approval of the new translation, the Vatican had asked to handle the translation of the antiphons without final review and approval by the US bishops. That, Bishop Trautman said, violated the Vatican II Constitution on the Liturgy.
