I’ve read those and I understand that the abortion funding did now go through, at least not in an obvious way. But, I could not find anything on the conscience clause.

“The bill still allows rationing of health care for seniors, raises health costs for families, mandates that families purchase under threat of fines and penalties, encourages counseling for assisted suicide in some states, does not offer broad conscience protections for health care workers and seeks to insert the federal government into all aspects of citizen’s lives.”

Sorry this is from an evangelical blog…didn’t have time to do a proper search and p(name removed by moderator)oint it further.

The House bill did pass tonight, with the abortion amendment not allowing for government spending being approved.

I take little comfort in this. In watching and reading for 20 years polictos, very rarely does policy come right at you. Maybe via SCOTUS decisions- yes we know. But through elected officials, it’s always more deft, more subtle.

They know how to work the fragmented and week kneed Catholics. Obama said himself prior to the elections abortion is ‘settled law’ in his address to PP.

But they won’t go right at this via FOCA or federal funding, it will be through some other means, through an organization thru an organization. ‘Social justice’ has been achieved tonight… and rest assured will be through the Senate in a very similar form. But at what cost? Economically? Our freedoms? And most importantly, Spiritually? ‘Who’ are we putting our faith in? I do believe our founding fathers had providence when writing ‘Life, Liberty, and the PURSUIT of Happiness’. In that order.

My aside, I’ve been watching the clouds overhead for many years. Maybe many of you have as well. I ‘feel’ these clouds have descended starting in 2008- with our economic crisis.

Something ate at me this last few months about 40 years-- from Scripture, from various talks—Sheen for one–the number is so prevalent in Scripture.

As I looked back in time- while I know the document, the timing did hit me. Of course, in 1968 was when Humanea Vitae (sp) was released.

We were given the instruction and guidance for many of our ills 40 years ago. Would not our families be better? Would not our culture? Would not our economy with 50 million or more citizens? It is clear Catholics and society, for the most part, but in majority, turned our backs on this.

I don’t know much, just what I am sensing. Have we been given 40 years to right the ship, so to speak… now, with societal rejection, face a time in wilderness?

Just my rambling spirit, but I don’t know. Maybe not. We’ll see.

God’s Freedom to us to chose Him will always be, but no other is guaranteed.
Wow, I am floored and if you don’t mind me saying so a little spooked. I have always thought of the number 40 to be metaphorical in the Bible, but never seen it quite this literal and in my lifetime.

I confess that I feel a great responsibility in this debate because I was one of those young mothers. But perhaps God is not so much punishing me or you, or us for our sins 40 ys ago or our parent’s sins, but maybe God is actually calling us to battle. Aren’t we all called to suffer as Jesus did? Only in our darkest moments or when the enemy appears to have victory clenched, does that fighting spirit inside us awaken to fight the battle and win the war, to endure to the very end? Perhaps this trial us Catholics are facing in this healthcare bill with the abortion debate is exactly what we need to get all of us ‘sleeping’ Catholics to wake up.

There are a great number of people who have been quite silent on this issue, and that is the mothers of all those aborted babies, like myself.

I confess that I am not as brave as some who have come out waving signs at people “I regret my abortion”, but maybe more of us moms should. Maybe it would be enough to get not just this bill to change, but get people’s hearts to change.

The best thing us Catholics can do is to correct that mistake. We need to go back and learn who we are us Catholics and what our church stands for. We need ammunition to fight the battle not just for our Church but for all people. I believe God is testing each one of us in this very moment to prove if we are worthy of him, not just in name but by our actions and fruits of our labor (or non-actions).

Great insight. You made a great observation.

This wasn’t in our bulletin. Our pastor is very active in this area and would certainly have included it. Anyone else not receive this?
I was going to be looking for this insert, but that Sunday an announcment was made simply stating that there was no bulletin that day. I haven’t pursued the matter to get an explanation, but am certain it would be a valid reason.

What happened was that the bishops released the e-mail for the insert on Wed of that week. Most parishes send their buletins to the printer on Wed or early Thurs. Many parishes did not make it.

My community has only one parish. What they had to do was photocopy the email, because the buletin was already gone to the printer. It cost a small fortion to photocopy 2,000 copies of that email. It was two-sided. Some parishes did not get a buletin, becuase they tried to get the insert in and missed the printing deadline. Then there are always the parishes where the pastors simple said that they were not going to do this, because it was too late. I know one parish where they put it out the following week.

As Catholics I can understand why we need to speak out against abortion. However, I think we need to spend more time addressing the causes of abortion - promiscuity, the media, advertising, etc.

If we could educate people of the true meaning of love and sex as God intended then abortion would be a non-issues.

We, as Catholics, cannot continue to ignore the root causes.

I agree with everything you wrote, but your last point I have to question. Do you really think we Catholics ignore the root causes because I see it addressed all the time in one form or another by the Church, by my daughter’s various Catholic schools, etc.

We do adress all of the above. It is not an either or proposition

The Franciscan Brothers of Life down south and the Sisters of Life up north do this line of minstry. We also train lay people to do it.

Somewhere along the line we as Catholics fell asleep behind the wheel. Protection of human life has been addressed by Pope’s in the past but Catholics ignored it and as a consequence, we had Roe vs. Wade.

It seems that some Catholics I know have accepted society’s norms over Church’s laws. The Catholic senators are a great example. They do not appear to be upholding church laws nor obeying God’s laws within their community as a politicians thereby they are the contributors to the problem. So no the church as a whole, meaning every Catholic member on the planet does not uphold the church’s teaching and does ignore the root causes because they themselves contribute to it through sex before marriage, living together, media influence, ignorance of the Catechism, etc.

It’s ignorance of God’s laws and failure to submit to God’s will by Catholics and all alike that has led to this.

The abortions in america will be paid because of Roe vs Wade not the current health care bill, you can’t let million of people who need health care die because you can’t control abortions in america. paying for abortions won’t allow or stop abortions, money has nothing to do with abortions, can’t you get that through your head. And killing doctors and nurses won’t stop abortions either. Where have you been the last 5000 years. Godless and selfish females kill in abortions. Do you want to put them in jail if they have an abortion. Okaaay, good idea, five years for both parents of an abortion in jail, ten years for their second abortion and life in prison for the third. If you can’t put them in jail leave our health care plan alone, you will be punished in prugatory for your sins bad judgement.
Please feed the hungry and sick children in america
Please have cathilic maternity clinics across the street from every abortion clinic to adopt their child. Do some thing constructive instead of distructive and horrorable.
Every day with out this health care plan felllow americans are dying::o:o:o:o:o:o:o

Might I add to you excellent statement that everyone in my district, county or state are not Roman Catholics. My representative must represent the majority in his or her district. We do have some very wonderful christians leaders who do not follow the strict teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Most Catholics acccept the majority rule, the rules of America, we can protest and have the laws changed, but respect the laws of the land.
We may not have any Roman Catholic representives in government if they insist on preserving the catholic view point.:):):):):)🙂

I thank God that I wasn’t born a female in a poor environment where I could be exposed to the elements which could lead to an abortion.
I thank God that I never got myself into a the unforgivable sin of divorse
I thank God that I wasn’t born a homosexual

I do remember what Saint Francis said; ‘’ but for the grace of God, there go I ‘’
Why do I miss the love and forgiveness in the Bishops statements?

Because of faults in the healthcare reform bills, the USCCB is issuing a mandatory bulletin insert for this weekend urging opposition to the current healthcare reform bills.

Bishops Call for Unprecedented, Massive Catholic Opposition to Abortion in Health Care Reform @ Catholic Online (www.catholic.org) catholic.org/politics/story.php?id=34735

Also look up the links in the article for up to the date information.

God bless!
Let me get this straight, we stop the million abortions by allowing the death of a million sick and disabled americans who need health care, good show, I’m not with you on this one

Very good, when are all Roman Catholics going to stop viewing the television shows that show premarital sex, show viagra adds, promote pornagraphy, stop going to movies where violence and sex and nudity are shown, and stop buying the sponsors products? You want to control catholic action, start there!~! Are we really hiprocrats?
We point fingers, shake our heads and want to stop paying for some godless act, blame the doctors and nurses for doing a clean safe procedure they are qualified.
Where are the preaching from the pulpit about the sins on the television and the movie screens? When did you hear the last sermon about respect of the female body, santity of marriage from the Bishops?:):):)🙂

All of these other issues become non issues if the human being’s right to be aborn is denied. The fundamental right to life is the foundation upon which we build all other moral and social laws. You must protect the foundation first, otherwise, your building collapses.

There is no question that the sick have a right to healthcare. The question is whether society has the right to include funding of murder in the same law that grants the sick the right to healthcare?

Such construction is piggy-back immorality. You take an immoral and violent action and you tie it into a bill that guarrantees a necessary right so that you can paint your voters into a moral corner. That is about as diabolical as you can get. It is exactly what Satan tried to do with Jesus in the desert, to tie in the good with the evil by using scripture (good) to tempt him (evil).

Now we have healthcare for all (good) tied in with abortion (evil) and politicians do not want to separate the two. The Church, like Christ in the desert, is not fallilng for it. The Church is saying to politicians the same thing that Christ said in the desert, “Thou shall not tempt the Lord your God.” Or in plain English, go back to the drawing board and come back with healthcare protection on a separate piece of paper and abortion on another and we can vote on them separately. We will gladly support healthcare reform.;

So you are rewriting the theology of the priesthood. Instead of the bishop having the power to govern the faithful, the faithful should now tell the bishops what to do.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

The bishops don’t like what the Senate passed and Planned Parenthood is livid also. The majority of Americans believe that there should be situations where abortions are allowed and the majority also believe that there should be limits on abortion. I think this is the problem with trying to find a political solution for abortion. The political solution you are going to get is what the Senate bill is now; something that neither the pro abortion nor pro life people are happy about.

As I understand it, States can elect not to have abortion included in the new plans offered to expand coverage. Even if a State elects to have it covered, it is an option someone will have to select seperately and pay extra for this feature. Will someone please tell me why the pro life people came out on the short side of the stick? I don’t agree.

Please realistically look at the picture. In our parish about 1/3 of the envelopes are returned any given Sunday. I’d imagine that a similar situation exists with Catholic legislatures. The bishops do not have as much influence as one might think.
