Cyprus (Reuters) - Pope Benedict on Friday said the brutal killing of a leading Catholic bishop in Turkey should not be allowed to hurt dialogue with Islam or stain the image of Turkey and its people.

According to the article, the man was the bishop’s driver. It may be that he was not employed by any Muslim Turks to be their drivers.

the driver was also receiving treatment for being mentally unstable…
 
I presume the authorities have their reasons (which I will assume are legitimate and not PR-related) for not believing it was not religiously- or politically-motivated. Though if the driver was a sleeper assassin deep-undercover for a militant group, or was religiously- or politically-motivated as a lone assassin, it’s possible we might never know.

i find this horrible act suspicious and, personally, don’t know if i share the belief that it was not religiously or politically motivated. if the driver was unstable, perhaps he did just snap. i believe it is possible that we will never know the true motivation for the killing.
does anyone know what will happen to the driver? will he be prosecuted?

He’s been charged with murder and detained awaiting trial. Turkey no longer has a death penalty (or if they do they don’t use it because of EU membership hopes), so he’ll face life (I don’t know if that’s mandatory or if he can get less, or how parole works there). I guess his lawyers might try the Turkish legal equivalent of an insanity defence.

The bishop was stabbed in the house and beheaded outside. He cried help before he died. The murderer shouted “Allah Akbar!”. The alleged insanity of the murderer is now to be excluded. There is no medical certificate to prove it. Murat Altun accuses the dead bishop of being a homosexual. Turkish minister of justice condemns the murder and promises to shed light on the incident.

How disgusting that the murderer drags the good name of this bishop in the mud when he is dead and cannot defend himself. 😦

The killing of Mgr. Padovese explain some observers, could have a strong symbolic meaning if you include his role as President of the Turkish Bishops’ Conference and the coincidence in time of the event: a few hours from the Pope’s trip to Cyprus. A terrible warning against the Catholic Church by organizations and groups who see openness and dialogue with Islam as a tremendous threat to their power and their ability to manipulate consciences.

The MSM and some Western governments seem to carefully avoid words like “jihadi” or “terrorist” at all, certainly not in the same paragraph as “Muslim” or “Islam.” That is a whole thread in itself, probably.We may never know the truth about this.

And the story keeps getting weirder and weirder:

That is to say, he had embraced the fundamentalist cause.”

that is weird. perhaps this is what angered the driver. maybe he did have plans to hurt the Pope and when those plans were cancelled, he killed the Bishop instead.

Btw, as Papal Legate to Turkey Bp. Padovese was following in the footsteps of then-Bishop Angelo Roncalli, John XXIII.
 
I read about this in the Turkish press a few days ago as a Catholic and a lover of Turkey I am deeply saddened by the death of the bishop. That being said I do not consider myself to be “in a war against Islam” and I never will. I will speak out against perversions of Islam with no problem. But this killing had nothing to do with Muslims there is no evidence in the papers I have seen saying that he was Muslim and let’s not forget he was being treated for mental illness as well. Instead of responding to this with derogatory words against Muslims we should honor the life of the bishop by praying for peace and an end to religious persecution no matter what the religion is. We should also pray for the man who committed this terrible murder.

There seems to be no question but that he was Muslim. It is a fact that his family was Muslim, and so it is most likely that he remained since converts from Islam can be murdered. Some reports mention “an alleged conversion” to Catholicism.

It is not a fact that he was being treated for mental illness. The opposite seems true, as people who knew him said he was sane.

There is no way we can at this stage verify that the murder had nothing to do with Muslims or Islam.
We may never know the truth, given that it happened in Turkey, a country which controls its press.
 
okay don’t want to start an argument so let me just finish with this I’m praying that one day all of this killing will stop and people from all religions can live in peace. With that I leave this thread.

yes, it would be nice if all religions could live in peace, but i think that will not be in my time.
