Good for them. This is a far more mature response than trying to turn the whole thing into a media circus. 👍

The document rightly appeals to the unity of the Church and unity of the Faith. The “Dubia” looked only at the document AL, in light of earlier documents. Some people might argue the 4 cardinals were jumping the gun, so to speak, projecting misinterpretations that ****might ****happen.

This document looks both at the document itself, and the responses since the document was issued. Some responses are alleged to be in contradiction to Church teaching and practice, and without a doubt, some responses - not hypothetical, but actually observed - put parts of the Church in opposition to other parts of the Church.

The Vatican might choose not to respond to the Dubia, on the grounds the Pope’s assistants already, surely proofread AL before it was issued. This new “appeal” is different, in that it takes into account the events of the last several months, ******after ******AL was issued.

Correct, there is an internal “editorial” process which is carried out on all official documents before release. That includes a formal academic review by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF).

According to a journalist with the French newspaper Le Figaro (a mainstream non-Catholic newspaper), 30 Cardinals expressed doubts about the text of Amoris Laetitia before it was published. The CDF also apparently issued 20 pages of comments and amendments, none of which were supposedly incorporated. The five Dubia that Cardinals Burke, Brandmüller, Caffarra and Meisner sent to the Pope and the CDF ask some of the same questions as the critique offered by the CDF in advance of AL’s publication. Cardinal Müller has since given an interview in which he stated that he has no authority to answer the dubia, which were also addressed to him as head of the CDF, without the Pope’s permission.

Here’s a link to an article by the National Catholic Register referencing the original French story on the CDF’s review comments:
