“Freshman Rep. Stephen I. Cohen, D-Tenn., is not joining the Congressional Black Caucus after several current and former members made it clear that a white lawmaker was not welcome.”

“I think they’re real happy I’m not going to join,” said Cohen, who succeeded Rep. Harold Ford, D-Tenn., in a majority-black Memphis district. “It’s their caucus and they do things their way. You don’t force your way in. You need to be invited.”

Funny, anyone who tried to start a “White Caucus” would be denounced as a racist.

I like Cohen. He has done a lot for Tennessee business. But by & large the black comunity does not like him. I have not exactly figured out why.

They dont allow republcian Blacks either. A few years Back a Black Republican joined and was shunned. What they would do was as sson as the caucus meeting started they would break into party caucus’s. Of course being the only republican it meant he had to leave the room and go meet with himself.

I am curious how he got elected in a majortiy black district?

I think there is a certain sense to keeping a minority self-interest group just for members of that minority. I wouldn’t expect to be able to join a mail list for Benedictine monks since it is restricted only to those who have joined the order. Allowing potentially large numbers of outsiders in would dilute the group and defeat its purpose.
