The perfect compromise candidate is Sandri. Born in Argentina of Italian parents.

The Italians wouldn’t be opposed to him and you’d still get a pope from Latin America.

He was John Paul II’s chief of staff.

He ran the trains on time but has been away from that job for the last 8 years which makes him an insider and outsider PLUS

He’s prefect for the Oriental churches.

When Sandri is elected on the last ballot Thursday–remember you heard it here first.

Wow that is a bold prediction 😃 I recall reading another poster, Petronus, predicting that against all odds Tagle will walk out on the balcony as pope.

I will certainly remember your post. I have refrained from stating that one single cardinal will be elected on a certain ballot. I’m just not that brave 😛

If you get this right, I’m re-naming you “**Jerry the Pope Oracle Jet” if that’s ok with you 😉
 
It’s just my guess.

The Holy Spirit will guide the conclave to the right candidate.

Whoever wins is fine with me.

I think Sandri would be a good choice and certainly the best compromise choice.

I wonder how many cardinals before the conclave looked at his bio and are now entertaining compromise choices?

It may not get to a compromise choice but if it does then I think that Sandri has the best chance.

If it doesn’t I do think that Scola would beat out Sherer and probably win.

I think for Sandri to win it would take 9 ballots which would put him over the top on the last ballot Thursday–plus the cardinals will probably want to lock it up by then and forego an extra day of prayer.

Plus that way you could have a big inauguration mass on Sunday and the new pope would be able to make some appointments before the next week being Palm Sunday with the run up to Easter.
 
They can talk to each other about this when they are not actively voting in the Sistine Chapel… they are just closed off from outside influence. But it is a matter of delicacy because it is poor form to actively campaign for yourself. It does not prevent another Cardinal from garnering support for another one.

Also I was under the impression they do chat and visit while in Concave, just not about who they’re voting for…

I am wondering though what conservatives think about this.

Perhaps they do - I don’t know. The selection of a new pontiff is a spiritual matter and as a Catholic I know the Spirit guides the process. Certainly the oath they take is a serious matter. One poster linked to an article yesterday in which it was reported that a cardinal said, “these are dangerous times. Pray for us.” If a “modernist/post-modernist” (what ever are we calling them these days?) becomes elected that, too, will serve God’s Divine Will although it might be a rather circuitous route and one of suffering. I am not worried who will be the next pope - this is the Church founded by Christ and although history has proven we’ve not always had good pontiffs in the past, the Church is still indefectible and in the process of being purified. But God does have His enemies and prophecy (which is always contingent) has offered some rather bleak views of the suffering to come in this age. It certainly is not an easy thing to be a good Catholic these days, nor a holy cleric.
 
One more important point - after the vote yesterday, EWTN had a piece on the history of the conclaves and it was said the Church charges the laity to pray during this time.
