The article reported that Pope John Paul II administered Blair communion in 2003. Why and how could he do that if Blair wasn’t (and still isn’t) a Catholic? Also, does anyone know Blair’s stands on crucial moral issues such as abortion and gay marriage. Obviously, becoming a deacon is very serious business and done by only those who are sincere and serious in their Catholic beliefs. I would be disappointed if reports indicated that Blair was a liberal Catholic, particularly in his positions on sexual morality. Does anyone have that info?
You have no idea what level of preparation he has been making in private. He could not for various political and legal reasons become Catholic while in office (it is illegal for a Catholic to be Prime Minister), so he could very well have been studying for months if not years in private in preparation for his conversion after leaving office. My whole point in posting this was/is confusion on how he can be “fast-tracked.” The article makes it sounds like he’s going to just snap his fingers and be a deacon.
True, I avoid reporters because they never seem to get anything I saw correct. When archaeologists start talking to reporters too much you get things like “Jesus’ tomb.”personally I would not react to any claim made in the popular press about any public figure, since 90% of what they print is exaggeration, overstatement, distortion and 10% is just plain lies made up out of thin air. Why not react when it actually happens?
I’m just assuming that if he has not yet converted, how could he become a deacon overnight. As the previous post stated, it could just be the way the story was reported. I’ve no concern for Mr. Blair’s private life, just over the administration of the sacrament. You have no idea what level of preparation he has been making in private. We seem to forget that just because someone is on the front page of the paper that they also have a private life that we really are not privy to, and is none of our business.

Are you sure? I know that it’s illegal for the monarch to be a Catholic or to be married to a Catholic, but I didn’t think it mattered for the Prime Minister to be a Catholic.it is illegal for a Catholic to be Prime Minister
I wonder if Mr. Blair has been trained by St. Ambrose of Milan.Once upon a time, a long time ago, a diocese lost its bishop and the people began to look about to see who they might have as their new bishop. There was a man in the city who was learned and was deemed wise by all who knew him; so the people petitioned that the man be made their new bishop. The man protested that he was not even a Christian. But the people were adamant that he should be made their new bishop. So the man submitted to baptism and was shortly after made bishop of the area.
Thus Augustine became the bishop of Hypo.

I am quite sure. My husband is a British citizen. Are you sure? I know that it’s illegal for the monarch to be a Catholic or to be married to a Catholic, but I didn’t think it mattered for the Prime Minister to be a Catholic.
The Act of Settlement of 1701 stipulates heirs to the throne cannot be Catholic or marry Catholics. There has not been a Catholic prime minister in modern times but that doesn’t mean it’s illegal. The Catholic Relief Act of 1829 made it legal for Catholics to be members of parliament and hold other public offices.I am quite sure. My husband is a British citizen.

…but not first lord of the treasury, a position usually as a rule held by the Prime Minister.nothing herein contained shall extend or be construed to extend to enable any Person or Persons professing the Roman Catholic Religion to hold or exercise the Office of Guardians and Justices of the United Kingdom, or of Regent of the United Kingdom, under whatever Name, Style, or Title such Office may be constituted; nor to enable any Person, otherwise than as he is now by Law enabled, to hold or enjoy the Office of Lord High Chancellor, Lord Keeper or Lord Commissioner of the great Seal of Great Britain or Ireland; or the Office of Lord Lieutenant, or Lord Deputy, or other Chief Governor or Governors of Ireland; or His Majesty’s High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.
Mods. I apologize and don’t mean for this to be a will he/won’t he thread! I was only questioning whether he could become a deacon so quick after converting and am now only addressing the constitutionality of it.Although Britain has never had a Catholic prime minister, there is no constitutional bar to Mr Blair converting while in Downing Street.
However, constitutional historians have said that such a development could prove awkward and could affect the relationship between Church and State.
As Prime Minister, Mr Blair makes recommendations to the Queen on the appointment of Church of England bishops.
Church spokesmen insisted, however, that this was a State rather than religious duty, and the Prime Minister’s religious affiliations need not be a difficulty.
