Not that I have any art background, and I know some people put a great stock in art that is incomprehensible, but by the sound of it the art in question seemed pretty stupid. Perhaps it’s just beyond me, but I can’t imagine what deeper truth the artist is trying to convey.
As for the act itself, well, it isn’t the first time something like this has happened. While the vandals probably have the best of intentions, I really do believe that it was the wrong action. After all, we are commanded to obey the law of the land unless unjust and reacting so strongly invites further blasphemy. Catholics would be best served by saying, “I disagree with the art you have created and find it personally offensive, but I respect your right to create such a piece.” Don’t feed the trolls, as they say on some message boards.
