I’ve recently returned to the Church and now I’m having fun seeing things through a new lense. These things are all probably old news to you guys but I thought I’d share and see if anyone one of any articles or books or anything that discussed this further in depth.

I was praying the luminous mysteries last night and it was the wedding at Cana.
I was trying to think of other passages where water and wine were part of the scripture and remembered two simultaneously. One was when Christ was on the cross and his side was pierced and water gushed out, and the other was during the last supper when he passed around the wine and said, “This is my blood.”
I’ve had a hard time concentrating lately and was wondering if anyone had a well written explanation of how the three passages all fit together.

Thanks!

Catechism
766 The Church is born primarily of Christ’s total self-giving for our salvation, anticipated in the institution of the Eucharist and fulfilled on the cross. “The origin and growth of the Church are symbolized by the blood and water which flowed from the open side of the crucified Jesus.” “For it was from the side of Christ as he slept the sleep of death upon the cross that there came forth the ‘wondrous sacrament of the whole Church.’” As Eve was formed from the sleeping Adam’s side, so the Church was born from the pierced heart of Christ hanging dead on the cross.

1325 The miracles of the multiplication of the loaves, when the Lord says the blessing, breaks and distributes the loaves through his disciples to feed the multitude, prefigure the superabundance of this unique bread of his Eucharist. The sign of water turned into wine at Cana already announces the Hour of Jesus’ glorification. It makes manifest the fulfillment of the wedding feast in the Father’s kingdom, where the faithful will drink the new wine that has become the Blood of Christ.

It’s not mere coincidence that the first miracle of Jesus is turning water into wine and his last before his crucifixion was to turn wine into his blood. Then, the centurion’s piercing allows blood and water to pour forth. That blood and water was a sign of his death, but our sharing in it is a sign of eternal life. In the Mass, the priest adds water to the wine while saying (usually quietly such that we can’t hear), “By the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.”

also pouring water in during the mass naturally keeps the vessels clean. something I didnt learn til recently.

It was also through the Word that God turned the waters of Egypt to blood to free the Israelites from slavery…a precursor of blood liberating people from sin.

Here is a really good talk about the Blood and Water from the Side of Christ…
I hope you enjoy.

I saw water flowing from the right side of the temple, alleluia;
and all they to whom that water came were saved,
and they shall say:
Alleluia, Alleluia
Praise the Lord, for He is good:
for His mercy endureth forever.
Glory to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
