Yes the pastor pushed it for two weeks straight and no I will not go out and buy second hand clothes at the thrift store. I buy and wear clothes that are good quality, respectable and multi-purpose; I don’t need a suit for any reason and I wore ties long enough when I was working. I won’t be kicked out of church nor will I tolerate anyone giving me a hard time over my clothes; I’m too old to care about or put up with that nonsense.Does your pastor really recommend this? I’m not sure how I would react if that was the actual recommendation of my pastor.
One can buy next to new: blazer, white shirt, tie, khakis and dress loafers for $20.00 at the local thrift shop. With some diligence almost anyone can accumulate $20.00 by skipping a meal or two, or possibly working an extra hour or two. So it wouldn’t be a matter of “the best I have” because that’s an excuse for the most part.
On the other hand I don’t know how I would react if my pastor actually tried to push coats/ties. Some of the ushers do at one of my parishes. They very same ushers that wear old grey pin-striped suit coats with maroon Dockers, a yellow dress shirt and a red tie.
