Board Games for Catholics to Avoid

I’m a hardcore board gamer and about the only game I can think of that I wouldn’t play as a Catholic is Kingdom Death Monster. I play games like Chaos in the Old World, Gloomhaven, Twilight Imperium, Scythe, etc and they’re all fine.

Candyland should be avoided. It promotes gluttony.
The same with Don’t Wake Daddy. It teaches rebellion against authority!

Oh, and Operation may encourage kids to cut people open!

Sorry also teaches kids that you can be evil all you want. Just say sorry!

LIFE may be the worst of all, though, due to its incredibly sexual content. Like, you can get married and have kids! Just think of the impure thoughts such things are filling our children’s heads with!

Monopoly is great, though! It truly captures the entrepreneurial spirit that made this country the great, God-fearing nation it once was!
Kingdom Death Monster
Where’s the NSFW tag when you need it? (For anyone who was curious like me, the main site hits you with an image that, among other things, has a topless woman.)

Sorry about that. I’ve never actually been to the site so I had no idea what was there.

He’s right, though. So much evil messaging in board games. I shudder to think of how many people have been led to vice by Candyland.

A couple of really bad table top games.

FATAL… don’t even bother to look it up. Just avoid. Saw a reference to it in the Battletech/Warhammer 40,000 communities as a terrible game and looked it up. Eeeew, just eeeew.

There’s also “Racial Holy War” out there. Same thing, don’t bother to look it up… it’s exactly what it says on the tin.

With regard to other stuff:

I highly doubt that Slaanesh, as demented as that character is in Warhammer 40,000, is going to cause people to suddenly become satanic. When all else fails: The Emperor Protects 🙂

Has anyone ever become satanic from spawning pit fiends in D&D? I have fond memories of my chaotic evil sorcerer in the CRPG Baldur’s Gate II… pit fiends for everybody.

That being said, I have seen some strange beliefs come out of modern “cultural” things.

While my comment was a joke, when I was growing up, we had house rules on LIFE meant to make the game “nicer”. For instance, we couldn’t sue, and if we landed on a space that had us do that, we had to re-spin. Even with that, it was one of my favorite games growing up. Clue was the other one until my educated guesses were right 90%+ of the time, forcing everyone to make house rules meant to stop me from “cheating”.

I remember when I first heard of the Final Fantasy House. My jaw dropped. While the “awful roommate” angle is a bit tame compared to some stories I’ve read, once you start getting into being incarnations of video game characters…yeah…It’s not hard to see why those people were so messed up.

Cards Against Humanity is one of the only board games I genuinely feel uncomfortable with and guilty playing (obvs I don’t classify Ouija as a board game). Even if you try and play clean yourself- some cards are disgusting.

Games I really enjoy: superfight, one night ultimate werewolf, jackbox (this is a group app game that requires everyone to have a phone), d&d, exploding kittens, unstable unicorns

RPGs are normally harmless, though there is a risk of addiction.

I wonder if anyone has heard of GURPS or The Star Wars RPG?
I used to play a lot of RoleMaster from ICE…because being a kid of the 70’s and 80’s I can tell you D&D it was and is a marketing dream. Wizards of the Coast the same…RoleMaster did not have constant compendiums to buy and offered the same kind of gameplay. I actually think the combat and magic system is better than D&D.
Claw Law, Arms Law, Spell Law, Character Law, ect…they were better and not constantly changing and the charts made it more realistic in understanding what was being done. Gygax & team created a perpetual $40.00 multiple book upgrade you had to buy every so often and the rules became hopelessly confusing to the point they had to hit reset, start a new version and everyone had to start over buying the material…what a racket.

Had a ball and never devolved into Tom Hanks hilarious portrayal in Mazes & Monsters nor has it caused me to summon a demon from the 7th gate of hades…

I still play Magic card game with my son…and he is 28 😂

I still go to Magic night and occasionally a D&D game night at the local comic book store…and yes I still collect what some here may consider questionable comics.

The biggest evil is how much cash I dropped over the years on constant new material…paints and figures and all kinds of other stuff.

It is all about perspective…if you’re looking for evil you will find it. If you’re looking to have fun with friends and enjoy strategy there are plenty of games to choose from.

Personally I think with the advent of electronic games (curse you Atari and Mattel Football).
(We) have lost a lot of face to face interaction that games used to bring us. In my area the ol’ Germans used to play Clabber and card games all the time. They would laugh and talk and socialize…it was a different time.

Unless it is a specific “adult” oriented board game they are benign.

Although the jury may still be out on Cooties…

Our family often enjoys playing Catan. It also has expansion packs to go with it.

https://www.catan.com/game/catan

About the game

The women and men of your expedition build the first two settlements. Fortunately, the land is rich in natural resources. You build roads and new settlements that eventually become cities. Will you succeed in gaining supremacy on Catan? Barter trade dominates the scene. Some resources you have in abundance, other resources are scarce. Ore for wool, brick for lumber - you trade according to what is needed for your current building projects. Proceed strategically! If you found your settlements in the right places and skillfully trade your resources, then the odds will be in your favor. But your opponents are smart too.

Why are you telling me this? I have made multiple posts about how my husband, his brother, a bunch of my friends in college, and my nephew all have played D&D and similar with no ill effects. I know one guy (out of a couple dozen) who played instead of studying, with very bad effects.

You may want to direct your comment to someone who actually said something bad about RPGs or is unfamiliar with them…that person isn’t me.

The whole satanism scare about Dungeons & Dragons, remain one of the most embarrasing cases of Christian-fail from the past millenium.

Discernment should be shown of course. Cards against Humanity for instance, is a bit too vulgar I think. But in general this whole worrying about satanic influences hiding in games like this is ridiculous.

I would love to see C.J. Cherryh’s Foreigner series made into a TV or movie series. I think it was considered at one time but dropped.

Catan has been the source of both my best and worst memories board gaming. At it’s core, I absolutely adore it and have had a blast with all the shaky alliances, subtle gains of power, and great mix of strategy and chance.

On the flip side, I once played where we had the cards from one of the expansions used instead of dice rolls. That has got to be the most boring match of any board game I’ve ever played. More consistently annoying, though, was one group of friends who basically tried making the game as annoying as possible. I think I only played with them once or twice, though, before suggesting other games. Unfortunately, they went to Risk, which I hate with a burning passion.

I know that Werewolf the apocalypse revised was like that a little. Like they had a ethnic stereotype of a werewolf tribe that seems to be a all Irish tribe that drinks and other stuff that i heard got removed in Werewolf the apocalypse 20th edition.

Avoid the Ouiji board and all other games that conjure up evil creatures and things…
