Does anyone have any experiences with Bob Jones, either by going to his University, Books, Tapes, etc. And can you share what you know? Thanks!

All I know is that once in a while I cross paths w/ a graduate from Bob Jones University. Pretty anti-
Catholic.

I went to a private Christian school (not parochial) that was run by a Presbyterian church. We had several Bob Jones University and ABeka (Pensacola Christian College) textbooks, since the Reformed textbook publisher (CSI) only concentrates on religion texts. Anyway, BJU was very harsh on the Catholic church in general and folks like Ignatius of Loyola and the Jesuits in particular. Even my teachers who used the books would often mutter that they were sick of BJU for beating a dead horse. ABeka wasn’t any better - in fact, PCC considers BJU a too liberal!

Hi karisue:

Do you often run into a BJU persona?

Thanks so much for sharing! 👍

Hi: J_Chrysostomos 👋

What is PCC? Sorry, I have been Catholic all my life (thanks be to God) and not quite up on the acronyms.

Thanks so much for commenting! 👍

I attended Bob Jones for four years and met my husband there. 🙂 I was there when the Pope died and Bob Jones III made his famous 'the Pope in in Hell" speech. I myself somehow managed to come out of the ordeal without any great anti-Catholic sentiments. How this came about I do not know. I did not graduate.

I will say when I applied for RCIA class Father Krempa went over my application with me and he raised his eyebrows at the entry of Bob Jones under my educational column. He told me “You’ll find our interpretations of Scripture a little different from theirs’.” I said I knew and was ready for it. For the rest of the meeting as he spoke to me he would from time to time look down at my application and let out an amused chuckle.

Bob Jones IV, son of Bob III is no longer affliated with the University. Why I do not know… He’s now one of the Editors of World Magazine.

Ask me anything. 🙂

Wow … r u sure about this??? Do you have a copy of his speech when the Pope Died?   I have fundamental Baptists that insist that Bob Jones ISN’T ANTICATHOLIC … and I shudder to think that he isn’t …

Are you and your husband Catholic? How did you come about that if you are? Can you please share it with us … I think this forum would be most interested in what you had to say???

Thank you for sharing !!!

I may have misspoke. I’m almost sure I heard that given during a chapel service but I do KNOW that an article was published in their now defunct magazine "Faith for the Family’. I believe that can be found on the web. The hosts at this site might well know where to find it.

You should know I was there in the late 70/early 80s. If they have changed their position I wouldn’t be at all surprised. They change a lot. Inter-racial dating used to be a big no-no but now I hear they allow it.

I went from Fundamentalist to Conservative Baptist to Non-Denom to nothing for while and then to a Seeker Church …I got so fed up with denominational differences. I was sure there was one truth out there and I was determined to find it and prayed for God to help me…and He led me to the Catholic Church. I was as surprised as anyone else. Husband is supportive but did not convert with me.

Bob Jones IV is a journalist and he is one of the editors of World Magazine… Its more of a political than religous publication. I know he did graduate work at Notre Dame. I think he’s still a fundamentalist but apparently not as strict about it as some of the rest of his family. This is the blog for his magazine.

edit: I was right. Catholic Answers does have a link to it.

His home school curriculum has a few pages about Christian history and it teaches about the corrupt church and the greatness of Luther. Not for Catholics, unless they want to show their children an example of bad curricula.

PCC - Pensacola Christian College. It’s another Baptist fundamentalist college but they’re moreso than Bob Jones. There’s an excellent site about abuses in the college at The Students Voice The site is run by Christians who are ex-students there.

PCC stands for Pensacola Christian College…sometimes called "The Little Bob Jones’.

For everyone’s information…there has existed more than one Bob Jones. Its a dynasty.

Bob Sr. Founder of the school. Died in 1968
Bob Jr. Former President and Chancellor. Died fairly recently.
Bob III Present President.
Bob IV Editor of The World Magazine.

Bob III also has a son named Stephen.

My wife’s Baptist cousins were staunch supporters of BJU. They went to BJU back in the 1970’s and my wife’s aunt even offered to send my wife there too. But then I entered my wife’s life and that was the end of her plans to attend BJU. My wife told me that Bob Jones was without a doubt a rabid anti-catholic from what she understood. And her cousins were certainly influenced by the BJU anti-catholicism around the time that they were going there. But over the years they have gotten more tolerant of us Catholics, especially after my wife converted to the Catholic faith. Even one of her cousins married a Venezuelan girl with black ancestry which would have been a BJU no-no. We even got them to attend a Christmas Eve Mass here in Detroit – the Mass even was in Latin. Talk about a shock for them.

And then there’s my wife’s immediate family who lived in San Diego and had Tim Lahaye as their Baptist pastor. Talk about anti-catholic. My wife heard plenty from her mother about what Lehaye thought of Catholics after we married. My mother-in-law sure was shocked when her daughter ‘abandoned’ her faith to join a cult. But that’s OK. Her mother has since passed away and we offer our daily prayers to her and other souls in Purgatory. I tell my wife that her mother most certainly knows the truth now.

In case you’re interested, here’s a speech Alan Keyes delivered at Bob Jones University - and he makes note of the fact that he’s black and Catholic (double whammy there).

I had to split it into two parts. Let me know if you can’t open the files.

**When I was a college junior (when Jerry Ford was President, so I guess this counts as an ancient history lesson), I went with a Christian friend of mine to her local church that was featuring BJ III as a guest speaker. He opened up the evening by “debunking” the myth that Sonny & Cher were both alums of BJU: he assured us all that, while not alums, they were “BJU’s Deans of Men & Women”… **

About all I can recall from the rest of the evening was that he referred to my university, and other “secular universities” as “seminaries for Satan”. Actually, I was more amused than offended by that.

The school itself, in Greenville SC, calls itself “the World’s Most Unusual University”, and in many ways, it is just that, in both a positive and a negative sense. While they forbid their students to attend regular movies and plays, they have excellent television and drama departments. The university also houses a superb art collection. I have heard it said by some that their accounting grads are much in demand because they are “incapable of acting dishonestly”: whether that’s true or not, I don’t know… but it’s one terrific Urban Legend to have being circulated on your behalf ( sort of like the Army’s purported high opinion of officers who come out of Brigham Young U’s ROTC program, I suppose).

**As far as being “anti-Catholic”…BJU’s crowd seem to wail just as gleefully against “Neo-Evangelicals”, mainline Protestants, and secular humanists. **

BTW, Jack Chick tracts are prohibited at BJU: my understanding is that they’re regarded as “pornographic”.
