I am sure if you were on any social media today, you saw much support for same-sex marriage today due to the Supreme Court hearings that were held. I was just sadden so many Christian friends and family essentially arguing people who support traditional marriage were the bad guys. I know this is the new societal norm and it’s not going to change anytime soon, but it saddens me.

Do you think it’s more the younger generations supporting same-sex marriage, which is the cohort I belong to? Just curious…

It does seem that way to me – that the younger people are more in support of same-sex “marriage.” But this might simply be a manifestation of what has long been true on many political and social issues, that younger people tend to be more liberal, and they tend to get more conservative (as a group) as they get older. But I agree that it is discouraging.

Here is a great short article that I found today, that you might consider sharing with anyone who you think may have an open mind on this issue:

I have also posted a couple of videos about the definition of marriage on my blog (link in my signature below).

No, I have many friends my own age, mid 40s, that are HUGE same sex marriage supporters and I’m avoiding them like crazy on Facebook.

I’m only 29, and most of my friends are traditional marriage supporters. Most of the people supporting it seem to be older 35+.

Young Opponents of Gay Marriage Undaunted by Battle Ahead

WASHINGTON — They hear that their cause is lost, that demographics and the march of history have doomed their campaign to keep marriage only between a man and a woman. But the young conservatives who oppose same-sex marriage — unlike most of their generation — remain undaunted.

They identify themselves as part of the “pro-marriage movement” and see themselves at the beginning of a long political struggle, much like the battle over abortion. If they can begin shifting the terms of the debate away from gay rights and toward the meaning of marriage, they say, they have a chance to survive short-term defeats

“The primary challenge that our side faces right now is the intense social pressure,” said Joseph Backholm, 34, the executive director of the Family Policy Institute of Washington. “To the extent that the other side is able to frame this as a vote for gay people to be happy, it will be challenging for us.”

To put it another way, opponents of same-sex marriage say they must argue in favor of traditional marriage, not against gay people or gay rights. “It’s really a broader defense of marriage and a stronger marriage culture,” said Will Haun, 26, a lawyer and member of the Federalist Society.

Thanks! Great article! I am avoiding getting into the debate online as it just gets very ugly. I do see a lot of my peers who were active in Catholic and traditional Lutheran campus ministries in college are very supportive of traditional marriage. But, then again, these peers are very solid in the faith which is a huge factor.

Yes it does get ugly because it is ugly. Stick to moderated forums if you can when discussing. Learn the argument and be able to respond well. We need you!

Yes, I don’t think social media is good for debating as people tend to be uncivil and just attack the person and not the argument. I did do some debating in college when a friend insinuated I hated gay people. Umm, no, I do have gay family members and friends. 🙂

Always remember to love the sinner and hate the sin. True Christian charity demands fraternal correction. State your position and stay professional.

Truth with love

not

Love without truth
or
Truth without love

Love is not tolerance

BISHOP FULTON J. SHEEN****Christian love bears evil, but it does not tolerate it.

Code:
http://www.catholiceducation.org/images/authos/Sheen8.JPG *Christian love bears evil, but it does not tolerate it. *
It does penance for the sins of others, but it is not broadminded about sin.
*The cry for tolerance never induces it to quench its hatred of the evil philosophies that have entered into contest with the Truth. *
It forgives the sinner, and it hates the sin; it is unmerciful to the error in his mind.
*The sinner it will always take back into the bosom of the Mystical Body;
but his lie will never be taken into the treasury of His Wisdom. *
*Real love involves real hatred:
whoever has lost the power of moral indignation and the urge to drive the buyers and sellers from the temples
has also lost a living, fervent love of Truth. *
*Charity, then, is not a mild philosophy of “live and let live”;
it is not a species of sloppy sentiment. *
Charity is the infusion of the Spirit of God,
which makes us love the beautiful and hate the morally ugly.

My Facebook feed is a sea of red. I’ve ignored it. I have not seen one pro traitional marriage comment today. Literally dozens of pro-gay posts though.

I am friends with someone who works as a classroom aide in a Catholic school, and even SHE posted pro gay stuff. Disappointing.

While I’ve read lots of Catholic material, I am not at all convinced by the anti-homosexual marriage argument. I really can’t find any argument that makes sense to me as to why it is such a problem.

Nevertheless, I am Catholic. So that makes this stuff very tricky for me. Fortunately, I’m also an anarchist, so I can just say that I don’t believe it’s any of the government’s business who you love. 👍

I don’t think it’s a generation thing.

Homosexuals and Lesbians are just looking for equal rights.

If you are married, just ask yourself a simple question.

Will your marriage be in any way harmed by two men or two women who get married?

The church has issues with this, but they are of there own making.

I’m indifferent on the issue, I really am. Gay marriage has been legal in Iowa for the last 3 or 4 years and it hasn’t effected my life what so ever. That said, I 1000% support those bakers, florists, photographers, etc. who refuse to work a gay wedding based on their beliefs.

Simply loving someone does not rise to the level of marriage.

It lowers the bar so far. Marriage and family should be elevated and protected for the good of society. So called homosexual marriage lowers the standard. It does not perpetuate the common good and protection of children.

.
If a Catholic employer who offers marital benefits is forced to pay for benefits to homosexual couples against his\her beliefs. then YES they are being harmed by gay ‘marriage’

Yes, by standing firm for God’s Will against a tide of evil. How easy it would be for the Church to just give in and support evil, but I am glad it stand firm to God’s commands.

Heard a comment on the radio today. Heterosexuals are mostly responsible for this tragedy when they broke down marriage advocating contraception and no fault divorce. It all started there when we ourselves started to disrespect marriage.

Simply loving someone does not rise to the level of marriage.
And when it comes down to it, engaging in homosexual acts, it is never an act of love. Damaging the immortal soul of someone is never a loving act.

I think that is awful. Is that actually happening or is that just anecdotal.

I just posted about this in the Evangelization forum, expressing my dismay with those Christians who are in support of gay marriage and such things as abortions.
