First James Cameron, now Bono attacks the Holy Catholic Church with this tirade on the NAACP awards:

Although he gives the generic title of the ‘Church’ it is apparent that Bono is attacking our Church.

His speech should have been something like this (If he had stayed a devote Catholic plugged into Sanctifying Grace): “To all those unfortunately infected with HIV, my sympathies are with you and your family with this cross you now carry. I urge you to practice chastity and abstinence when appropriate. We are after all not beasts completely run by our sexual instincts but can control this spread if we are true to the Churches teaches on monogamy, chasity and true holiness. There is no such thing as sin without consequences and it does affect the innocent, so for the geniune love of God in heaven please stop committing sexual sins, God warned us long ago and we still aren’t listening.”

Although I doubt he would have received a standing ovation, stick it to the rich Church standing in judgement is easier at awards shows.

People really do set themselves up as God thinking they have the solution all the worlds ills.

It’s my understanding that Bono was raised a Protestant, though one of his parents is Catholic. I could be wrong about that. In any event, it’s trendy to attack the Church it seems. Sad to say. Maybe if we’re lucky, all of these “celebrities” will move on to the next trend, like shaving their heads Britney Spears-style.

Am I missing something? Maybe that clip only covered part of his speech, but I don’t see how he was attacking the Church – the gist of what he said is that God is with the poor, wherever they are, and “our” (his) generation can be the one to end extreme poverty.

No matter who the speaker is - if there is truth in the message, then I applaud that!👍 Kudos to Bono!

Funny the part that he starts out with seems a bit too disconnected to the second part. The Church does not judge the poor that is infected with HIV. The Church teaches that the judgement is up to God. It does have the ability to judge actions. I don’t know, is Bono judging the Church? Did someone stick a burning cole into Bono’s mouth? If he is attacking the Church, does he actually know what he is attacking? If the Church made a judgement against the poor, I’d attack the Church too, but I learned pretty early on God does the judging of people, or maybe even the people do the judging of themselves upon the glory of God.

On the other hand, if he’s attacking the Church, I guess that’s par for the course. He can join his name upon a long lists of names for nearly 2,000 years. Soon enough I’m sure it’ll be in fashion to attack the Church because it didn’t judge the people enough, who knew they had the infection and kept spreading it. Time again for another episode of “As the Pendulum Swings.”

I watched the linked video, and maybe my hearing isn’t what it used to be, but I just didn’t hear anything in there that sounded like he was attacking the Church.

When it comes to helping the poor, perhaps he needs to be educated as to all that the Church does to help the poor.

Not seeing anything like an attack on the Church there, I’m afraid.

And Bono was never Catholic. His dad was Catholic and his mother Protestant. He grew up as a Protestant with a strong religious faith but was not attached to any one church. Later, as a teenager, he. the Edge and Larry Mullen Jr. became involved in a non-denominational charismatic sect, but that didn’ t last too long.

I may not agree with all of Bono’s opinions. But I do believe he has a very deep faith in Christ and struggles to live and express that.

If you have ever watched British tv shows the attacks are generally on the Church of England. I can’t delve into Bono’s mindset, but he may have been going after that “the” Church.
Of course, it also could be the HRCC or Christianity in general.
And…having watched the speech…if you are offended by that…look inward.

I don’t see any wrong with what he said.

Boy howdy! I find it amazing that people know so little about the incredible charitable outreach of the Church. Anyone can google their local Catholic Community Services website and see the enormous web of services they provide. In my state, we are second only to the state in social services.

But I’m not convinced it was the RCC Bono was attacking. His religion has always been a big mystery to me. I remember when U2 first appeared on the scene, they were billed as four Christian boys from Ireland. But who knows today what that means?

I’d really to know what he actually meant by the “church” that cast it’s judgement down on the poor with HIV. I don’t care if it is the Catholic Church or not, I’d really like to know what church he meant.

It’d be like if someone went out and said, “I’m sorry about those doctors who just turn their backs on you.” If I was a doctor I’d be upset, first if a doctor just turns their backs to the sick without good reason, I’d like to know who it is. Second I’d be upset that the reputation was put in question, and not to be able to understand where the problem is.

If Bono has a problem with some “Church,” come on tell us who. There are lots of members of churchs doing mission work that would not like their intentions to be put in question.

Pax vobiscum!

It didn’t seem like he was attacking the Church at all. He said “those in the Church” or “church”, maybe he was talking about people in a church building…it wasn’t very clear. Anyway, I didn’t get an attack on the Church from what he said. He was right, God IS in all those poor people.

Although, if I was at the NAACP awards, I would make a nice little speech condemning abortion and their organization for supporting it.

In Christ,
Rand

Bono… whatever!
I’m a huge U2 fan; but Bono is a twit.
Look, I don’t think he was making any reference to condoms or the Catholic Church in this video. In fact, I’ve heard him say good things about the Catholic Church, especially JPII’s concern for the poor. He wrote “When I Look at the World” for JPII and he wears the pope’s rosary around his neck.
Nevertheless, Bono is a twit bacuase he’s pro-abortion. I just can’t get over that. He seems like such a hypocrite to me.
If he really cared about dying children, why support abortion?
He’s just a product of the culture. Whatever’s fashionable…

I just hate it when certain rock stars act so self-righteous, who join causes cause it is fashionable. So many join causes, and not to get any fan fair. Oh I maybe be meaning Bono or I may not. I may not even be referring to any rock stars. I just thought it was convenient to try to make my point.

Bono says one generic thing re: the Church and gets slammed…he says dozens of things re: the poor but that doesnt count. Par for the course. Disagree with the Church and you are attacking it. Its extreme thinking like when people disagree with the war or Bush, certain people go to the extreme of equating that with attacking America or not being a “true patriot” whatever that means

Why would someone not expect Bono to attack the Church, he has no loyalty to Her.

I didn’t know he supports abortion, if he does them I’m on your side.

I couldn’t open AOL even though I signed up, it said timezone error ! so I wasn’t able to decipher the Dublin brogue for you all.

I’ve never been a fan of him personally, like his band especially the Edge, so unless I can open AOL player I don’t know exactly what he said.

I stopped listening to him years ago with his smug comments about N,Ireland, easy to do when you live 100 miles the other side of the border.
