Just found this thread. Yes, dealing with the SDA, who believe that the Pope is the antichrist (but, which one? There have been 266!) can be um, interesting. They clearly reject Apostolic succession but, for some reason, believe in demonic succession! At the same time, they basically preach the infallibility of Ellen Gould White, their founder. I find this odd. History records that, as a youth, she was struck in the head by a rock, receiving a serious injury which left her in a coma for two or three weeks. She was also exposed to mercury in the course of her family’s hat making business. Sometime after this, she began receiving “visions” and based her prophecies and writings upon them.

As to bible commentaries, here are two popular sized and priced books. I have Inside the Bible and can recommend it. It was written by Jesuit priest Kenneth Baker, who is now a Bishop, I believe. It is quite useful, and re-reading each short chapter seems to yield new information each time. It places each book of the bible in cultural, historical and theological perspective, and lists what is known about its date and author(s).

I do not have You Can Understand The Bible by Professor Peter Kreeft, but he is such a gifted (Catholic) writer and teacher that I will probably buy it. I read the Amazon.com reviews. The first appears to be by a Protestant pastor who highly recommends the book, giving it five stars. The last review is also by a Protestant, but one who was shocked to find that Kreeft believes that the Catholic Church is the one true Church. The man’s ‘sour grapes’ one star rating reflects that.

I don’t know what happened but I seemed to have lost over half of it. I’ll need to redo some of it.

Actually, my Catholic friends are contemplating on discontinuing. One even got emotional that night because she was deeply offended. I, on my part see this as an opportunity to correct their wrong belief about us.

I am still praying on how to apporach this on our next meeting (if ever there is still one). I want to make a point by point case. Any suggestions are welcome.

You are exactly right. A great opportunity to present evidence for the Church that Christ founded. Since God is in charge, he will water the seeds that you plant. The harvest may come this summer, or decades from now, as someone who was lead astray recalls something that you said and begins to question what they are practicing. The Lord, in His mercy, does not allow us to see much of the effect of our words - lest our egos become as large as our faith should be.

Perfect! Prayer is the only way to begin this. Pray that the Holy Spirit, Who accomplishes all conversion, will illumine your words, and will illumine their hearts to be open to the truth. In every other faith tradition (and they are traditions) to be “the one true Church”, something must have gone irreparably wrong with the Church that Christ founded on Peter. Since Christ is perfect and His words endure for ever, we must have faith that what He said about His Church in Matthew 16 was true and remains true.

Additionally, consider stressing the Sacraments - each of which was instituted by Christ Himself, and which remain in the CC and Orthodox Churches. The Eucharist is the perfect example, being the fulfillment of His promise to remain with us until the end of the age. Outside of the Eucharist, the bible says only that where 2 or 3 are gathered, there He is present. What about those other times? When I speak of my faith, I mention the amazing devotion that is adoration of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.

Regarding reconciliation, you can point out that in every case where Christ forgave sins, he said so to each person. He spoke the words of absolution to them. He did this for a reason, and ordered that the Apostles continue the practice. Ask how the others know, to the core of their being, that they are forgiven when they go straight to God. They have never heard the words of absolution, as Christ practiced.

I can recommend the book Search And Rescue by Patrick Madrid. It will serve you in this instance, and as you seek to call the fallen away Catholics back to the faith. A good portion of the SDA church is fallen away Catholics.

I will check this out at a Catholic bookstore tonight.

And since you are a prayer warrior, please inlcude me in your pray that God may give me the strength, wisdow and zeal to explain our faith when i am given an opportunity to talk to our SDA brethren. I am not a good speaker and loose my train of thought easily when i get nervous but I always hang on to the promise of God to Jeremiah.

Ask Saint Paul, whose words often failed him, and who did not have great powers of speech, for his intercession. He was meek in person, but bold in his letters. You will receive the help you need.

Very faithful to Magisterium.

I don’t maintain the site. The speaker is a man named Naji, maronite catholic, father of 7, very devout and intelligent man. I’ve personally attended this bible study for about 4 years now and its taught me about 85% of my catechesis. He does not sugarcoat the truth.

you can listen to a few talks on my signature if you like. As of now, the website is not free since the start-up costs were high and he needs to support his family, but eventually, he hopes he can preach the good news full-time. I personally was moved to share the website w/ everyone I know, and have done so.

If you are referring to the googlebooks link I gave then that is limited preview. Keep in mind that in that commentary it is in Greek as well as English, and I did not provide the Greek portion for obvious reasons, which in turn may appear to be missing pages.
