As a clinician I’ve worked with people suffering from this and trained in dialectical behavior therapy. I have family members with this and I, myself, have it. It’s a huge, huge struggle.
Tonight we were watching football and my husband told me Brandon Marshall of the the Dolphins is being treated for BPD. I read some articles online and the accompanying comments. They were the usual fare: “If you’re involved with someone with BPD… RUN!!!” I’m awake right now, honestly, at 2:45 in the morning, because I’m feeling shame and sadness over having this disorder. I woke up a little while ago after having a nightmare that my husband, my priest, and several other people were confronting me about this problem!
Personally, I’ve worked really hard on getting myself under control. Right now it’s tricky with the pregnancy hormones and being unable to take psychotropics to at least get my moods to stay close to baseline. That fear of abandonment is an absolute killer for me.
I don’t have any answers right now or any help. It’s a struggle. I’ve matured quite a bit over the years and that’s helped. I’ve had supportive therapists. I had one therapist who told me that BPD is an “excuse for women to act immature and promiscuous; there is no such thing.” My experience is that it is real and quite hard to handle. I’m seeing traits of this disorder in my preteen son and that’s scary. I want him to have a content, “normal” life, one with security, joy, and not all this drama.
