Boston Cardinal: Church Needs 'Clear' Injunction Denying Pro-Abortion Pols Communion

Like many other problems…
what we need is not “new laws” what we need is solid enforcement of the old laws.
 
This is amazing, the American bishops didn’t get the memo. A 2004 letter to bishops that has been buried for six years.
 
Bishops have clear autonomy in their diocese. As Cardinal Ratzinger he is a bishop and my understanding of Church governance is that one bishop doesn’t have to obey another bishop regardless of the office of the latter. Cardinal O’malley is correct. If something is to be done it should be a universal action that covers the entire Catholic church. Right now what you have is a fractured position. When a bishop tells someone not to receive communion and it becomes public, rightly or wrongly, to most it appears like the bishop is grandstanding.

Both the Bible and the Catechism uphold the grave matter of sin that is abortion. One would think that the CCC would be enough guidance for any bishop to deny the Eucharist to those who actively support the murder of the most innocent.

Yes, but unfortunately that doesn’t appear to be the case.

The appearance of grandstanding might be preferable to the current impression being made.

I don’t know why the letter written to the bishops by then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as
Prefect, Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith would not be sufficient for them. Are they not going to move without a specific instruction from the Pope?
