Personally, I do not believe in retirement, so I say raise it to 70 or beyond.

We will all have plenty of rest when we get to Heaven…this place (earth) is for work and we should be doing that as long as we can.

Work is a blessing.

I can see raising the age to 70; I do have a problem with limiting benefits to those who only need them. Reason being that if a person has paid into the system for all these years, she/he should be able to draw on what they’ve put into the system at the appropriate age.
Yeah. I see in the news that a city manager in Bell, CA has a salary of about $800,000 per year and people are demonstrating to force him to quit. So, the latest I heard was that he was considering retiring, and of course, when he retires, he will have contract guaranteed pensions of $600K plus $270K per year for a total pension of about $870,000 per year. That’s not a bad pension for someone who has put in at work only a few hours per week.

I understand where you are coming from. What do YOU suggest they do to get this train wreck under control?

The luxury of retirement on Social Security will be but a blip on the historical timeline. Too bad I was born too late to enjoy the years-o-plenty that so many have had. I agree, irishpatrick, that REAL retirement is when we die. Our work is not only at our places of employment, but also in the world, spreading the Gospel.

I agree 100%

Work is a blessing and work we should do until we no longer can. There are many health benefits that come from work, not least of which is the fact that people feel as if their lives have a focus and a contribution on a regular basis.

I have never understood the deep desire for retirement…it is as if millions want to no longer count in this culture, or as if they feel they reach a point where they no longer are expected to contribute anything to the world, to the nation and to the kingdom of God. I never want to reach a point where I do not matter.

The 80-100 years we might get here is just a blip compared to eternity, might as well do as much work as we can and make a contribution to the greater good for as long as possible.

(BTW, people who leave their place of employment to do some other form of work are not retiring in the truest sense of the word–they simply left one type of work for another, and in that there is nothing wrong at all…imo)

Admittedly I’m not an expert on economics; however I believe that by pulling out all of our troops from Iraq, Afghanistan and Korea, cutback on military infrastructure, eliminate Federal agencies (such as the US DOT, US dept of Agriculture; US Dept of Education, etc. Raise SS tax 1.4%; that should more then enough to “get this train wreck under controll” as you put it…

Just pulling out the American troops from various countries around the world would save an enormous amount of money.
