In a wide-ranging interview published on June 10 by the Gaborone Sunday Standard, Botswana’s leading prelate said that the clerical abuse scandals are a “reflection of a sick society” …

According to Bishop Seane:
But the Church will sympathize to see how people who find themselves with such inclinations can be helped. There are interventions that include surgery
Excuse me? What surgical interventions help homosexuals…?? I hate dealing with SSA, and if I’d thought for one moment that surgery would make me straight, I’d have it done in a heartbeat.

As a person from California with a diverse group of friends of all orientations and many different religious backgrounds, I don’t think a single person “chooses” to be gay. They do not choose to have homosexual urges, nor do they want to be discriminated against.

The only “choice” they make is whether or not to act on their urges. Some people just aren’t that strong (either that or they don’t see anything wrong with going against the Bible), even heterosexuals: almost 50% of babies born in 2007 were born to unwed mothers. 😦

The scandals with priests (less than 2% of all priests were accused) had nothing to do with homosexuality, as they involved an adult with a child. That is pedophilia. Homosexuals are adult men who are attracted to other MEN or adult women attracted to other WOMEN. No children are involved!!!

People need to stop confusing the two. Some of the best scout masters have homosexual urges with other MEN (and may or may not act on those urges)… but since the man is unmarried people assume he is a child molestor so the man isn’t allowed to be a scout master working with and helping children earn their badges. 😦

Thanks!! That’s exactly what I was going to say!

I’m with ya, brother! I’d even be willing to undergo risky surgery to rid myself of this curse.

Many make the point that a majority of cases were post-pubescent boys between 12-17. This doesn’t suggest “pedophilia”, as it is usually directed to pre-pubescent children of both sexes. There is a segment of the homosexual community attracted to younger “tweens”

I personally know an openly gay former priest who has told me that local seminaries during the 70’s and 80’s were “Turkish bath houses”.

LCMS_No_More and onthenarrowpath, may God bless you in your struggles. You humble those who have a lighter cross to bear, and fare worse.

You are correct in that pedophelia is adult-child; however, 80% of the cases were male-male, adult-teen. Pedophilia is attraction to pre-pubescent minors. Ephebophelia is attraction to pubescent minors and occurs in both heterosexual and homosexual individuals. Homosexuality does have something to do with a man who desires sex with a teenage boy.

That said, I do agree that the desire is not a chosen desire.

But the children were post pubescent.

If what you say is true, that homosexuality can only exist between those who are legally defined as adults, then any stories we read about high school kids ‘coming out’ are really false.

For example, that girl in Alabama who claimed to be a lesbian and wanted to take her ‘girlfriend’ to the prom wasn’t really a homosexual, as neither were adults; simply post pubescent teens.

It that really your claim?

A simple question.

So men and boys are opposite sex?

Oh wait, they are the same sex. That’s shocking news! Wow, that means…Homosexuality.

Pedophiles come in many flavors: bisexual, heterosexual and homosexual.

It’s time for catholics to get educated on this since the media refuses to.

The term “pedophilia” ONLY applies to people inclined to molest young children of an age when their bodies are mostly androgenous. This essentially means before puberty starts. Once a boy starts going through the changes of puberty he is no longer attractive to a pedophile, properly defined. Pedophiles aren’t interested in victims that are starting to develop traits of masculinity or femininity.

As noted by others, 80% of the priest victims were pubescent boys. Another poster mentioned the correct name for this (begins with an E, I can never remember it).

All this said, it is entirely unfair to suggest that someone with an SSA can automatically be suspected of inclination to molest teenage boys. That’s like saying all blacks have sickle cell anemia. In the case of sickle cell, it may be more common in the black population than in the caucasian, but it is still fairly rare. Same thing with boy molesters among the homosexual population: they exist, but are fairly rare.

I do have to wonder what this operation he speaks of is. Sounds more like a myth than reality. Bishops aren’t omniscient and are as susceptible to misinformation in matters of science as the rest of us.

Thos those faithfully struggling with SSA, take heart! God is greater than any of our afflictions. And while sexual union with a spouse is great stuff, it REALLY isn’t the primary center of human existence that Hollywood wants you to believe it is. A spouse can never fully fulfill you like Christ can. This is why so many people divorce in our world. They are expecting another faulty human to fill the hole in their hearts; can’t be done. Only Christ can do that, and He can do it just as well if you are married or if you are called to lifelong celibacy by your circumstances.

Yes, however it is fair to say that the priest predator problem indicates the possibility that there may be a greater likelihood for that inclination. If it was a case of 80% teenage girls or 80% pre-pubescent children, then it would have been a different problem. The Vatican is addressing the problem as it exists. That is why the the 2005 letter went out regarding the discernment of those with deep-seated homosexual desires.

You make reasonable speculation about the motives of the Vatican in that letter, but it is just speculation.

Alternative explanations include the fact that it is exceedingly hard for someone with an active SSA and a desire to be holy and chaste to tell the difference between a call to priesthood and the call to celibacy inherent in the problem of SSA. It also may address the fact that the causes of SSA are poorly understood and likely to remain so in the currently politicized climate of the science on the subject, so prudence requires a step back.

I’m not disputing your speculation on the motive entirely, but you should acknowledge that it is not explicitly put that way in the letter.

You miss the complexity of human nature. You simplfy things. I don’t think this. I don’t think that. But you really don’t know. You are merely one human being. The orgin and your responsibility for your urges is beyond you. You probably deny the supernatural and preternatual worlds. You don’t know what influences you are under. You think its all just you. What you believe is a lie taught by the lovers of science and secularism. Science and secularism are only a human constructs that give partial explanations. You want a world free of struggle and and pain, in this world you won’t get it. Just obey the moral law of God and live with it.
