Boy Scouts to allow gay youths to join

It would be prudent for Catholic affiliated troops to distance themselves from the BSA right now before it starts costing oodles of money. We all know what is coming next.

The policy doesn’t go into effect until next year. There is time to put safeguards in place if need be. Or bail, which ever.

So when someone tells you, “I’m not gay,” is this too much information?

There’s that slippery slope again. We don’t really know what’s going to happen – we can only speculate. But leaving is always a legitimate option. Many other groups have been referenced here that would meet the needs of Catholic youths. The BSA willingly voted to amend its policy (conspiracy theories about it being “forced” into this vote by a “gay agenda” aside, please, since there’s no demonstrable evidence for such claims). It seems the BSA determined what it wants to “stand for.” And again, no one is forced to join.
We know what will happen.

The BSA was forced into this position:

"The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force applauded Spielberg for his resignation.

“We’d like to thank Steven Spielberg for recognizing the bigotry that the Boy Scouts’ policy has been perpetuating,” said Elizabeth Toledo, the NGLTF executive director. “This issue won’t go away for the Boy Scouts. Through actions like these, they will be forced to revisit [their policies].”

And its decision is still not good enough.

“Today is a historic day for Boy Scouts across the country who want to be a part of this great American institution,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “But the new policy doesn’t go far enough. Parents and adults of good moral character, regardless of sexual orientation, should be able to volunteer their time to mentor the next generation of Americans.”

“The Boy Scouts of America can do better,” said Zach Wahls, an Eagle Scout and Executive Director of Scouts for Equality. “We welcome the news that the ban on gay Scouts is history, but our work isn’t over until we honor the Scout Law by making this American institution open and affirming to all.”

sigh Yes, I know how things work around here. Normally I wouldn’t use the word “trait” but of course unless I describe it with the word “sin,” the conversation couldn’t proceed. Guess it can’t proceed at any rate. I’ve no reasonable response to a comparison of homosexuality and pedophilia because it isn’t a reasoned comparison.
By “reasoned” do you mean that literally or do you just mean reason you agree with? There are in fact reasons. I gave three points of comparison early that are germaine to the BSA situation that makes pedophila a better comparison to homosexuality that it is to heterosexuality. There are not other traits to which it compares better. But this assumes adherence to Catholic doctrine.

I don’t normally beg, but please stop sharing the HRC/Spielberg stuff. Its been cited at least five times in this thread and it doesn’t prove that the BSA was strong-armed into changing its policies. The NGLTF can claim whatever it likes. Over 1400 leaders from across the country voted. If over 60% of those who voted had wanted to stand firm in the BSA’s original policies, they would have done so. They didn’t. This may be disappointing to some but again, everyone can bow out at any time.

I mean that literally. You discount the medical community’s conclusions about homosexuality to begin with, which invalidates any genuine attempt at a reasoned conversation about this topic.

Here’s a bit on the subject from Huffpo
Less than a week ago, we were stunned by the brutal killing of 32-year-old Mark Carson, a gay man shot dead in New York City on the street in an alleged hate crime by a man who hurled anti-gay slurs. Carson appeared to be killed simply because of the gunman’s twisted beliefs about gay men. The killing followed a wave of similar attacks (and was followed by still others) that showed a rise in violence by individuals who think gay adults are dangerous, deviant and disgusting. To then have the Boy Scouts of America establish a new policy by the end of the same week which further validated the beliefs of these attackers is exceeding cruel. And it’s far from any kind of progress.

Wait – we should cater to homophobes? That’s like claiming that affirmative action shouldn’t be in place because it infuriates closet racists. Who cares? These people aren’t using logic to begin with.

Organisations such as this should not stop people from joining because of their sexual orientation, or even if they were sexually active. Allowing someone to join an organisation does not mean that you approve of their behaviour. Should the scouts bar any non-celibate heterosexual from joini?
Yes, just as the should bar sexually active girls from joining the Boy Scouts.

There you use that word again. Reason. I stated reasons. Likewise there are reasons to distrust a contemporary psychiatric majority which is little more than a windsock in the air of public opinion. This is why that a conversation involving Catholics will have reasons that have stood the test of time and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Race is not an action, homosexual practice is.

Race is simply a human adaptation.

There are many many instances in history where majorities made wrongheaded decisions. It happens more often when we lose our moral compass.

Not all reasons (claims) are reasoned. You claim, for example, that the “contemporary psychiatric majority …] is little more than a windsock in the air of public opinion.” This is an unsubstantiated claim that has not been proven.
