I strongly suspect 1ke has that all figured out…now. It won’t make a difference if he is over his divorce or not if it turns out he was validly married…

Given her posting history?I strongly suspect 1ke has that all figured out…now.
Don’t beat around the bush. Be clear about your goals and expectations. No “hoping” he gets the idea.I hope he will too sort of get the idea that I want to wait.
Send him on his way. He knows what he wants (marriage & family now) and you know what you want (more life experience & career then marriage & family) these are not the same goals and waiting around to see if one of changes their mind is not fair to either.I have been seeing this guy for a couple months now and when we met he said he has the intention of finding his true love and marrying her and starting a family. That is his dream and mine is a little different. I do like him a lot he’s a great guy and everything perfect marriage material but I am 20 years old it makes me feel like if I want to keep this great guy I am supposed to marry him and start a family when I am finished school. I will be 23 at that point and I know I won’t be ready for all that.
I am terrified to be starting a family and getting right when my life is about to begin. If I wasn’t in school right now I know for a fact he would have asked by now. I am not saying I never want to get married and have a family I just know that I don’t want to do it too soon. My dream is to get my career going and put all my hard work to good use. Has anyone else ever been in a similar situation?
That’s what I figured. Hopefully, it works out like that, but it’s important that you communicate how you feel to him.No it isn’t what is going on. I just think he is just super infatuated right now. I mean I hope if I can keep his mind off the idea of marriage and we get to know each other better I hope he will too sort of get the idea that I want to wait.
It sounds like you’re making a lot of assumptions about him wanting to marry you but you aren’t doing a lot of talking about it. If you can’t talk about marriage, you aren’t ready for it. Period.I think that what I am afraid of is getting married and regretting not accomplishing my goals in life. There is so much I want to do and now I am 20 and I worry that getting married too soon would affect my ability to meet my goals. I also worry that if I become too focused on my career I might never get married.
Getting a job is not the beginning of your life. Starting a family would be a much better marker.I am terrified to be starting a family and getting right when my life is about to begin.

I have not doubt she knows… but this is read by a large public that may or may not know. And remarriage after divorce without annulment is a hot topic, and one that people don’t always understand clearly. I thought it was worth the clarificationGiven her posting history?
Yes…yes, she does.

Yep, I personally see a lot of posters who are “sloppy” for lack of a better word about this issue when they give advice. I’ve often seen people in troubled marriages being advised to consider “separation, divorce, and annulment”, as if annulment is guaranteed in cases of divorce, which further confirms non-Catholics perceptions about annulment as “Catholic divorce”, or perceptions that the tribunals (and by extension, the whole Church) is corrupt and just rubber-stamps annulments as long as they’re paid to do so, and/or the petitioners have power and influence.I have not doubt she knows… but this is read by a large public that may or may not know. Better be clear than not.
Knowing 1ke, there was an automatic presumption that a Catholic does not get on a courtship track with people that he or she does not know are free to marry. One does not become the steady girlfriend of someone else’s husband, and “ignorance” is not an excuse. You either know they’re free to marry or you don’t even think about marrying them.It won’t make a difference if he is over his divorce or not if it turns out he was validly married…
In my experience and barring a deployment or a like period of enforced separation, couples who state a firm intention to marry usually either do it within 18 months at the most or else they break up. Maybe they get back together later, but people do not wait that long for marriage without getting into a quasi-marital situation that morality precludes.(IOW: they either marry or they move in together or essentially move in together.)I have been seeing this guy for a couple months now and when we met he said he has the intention of finding his true love and marrying her and starting a family. It is a bit patronizing to assume that. There is nothing wrong with someone old enough to support a family courting with the idea that the process will lead to marriage in a relatively short amount of time. It is not unusual for young men to have an extended family structure that is fully prepared to help him start a family simultaneously with finishing his professional training. (I mean that it is hardly unknown for men in dental school or finishing up study on a trade to be married before they finish, for example.) If that is what he wants, that is legitimate, too.No it isn’t what is going on. I just think he is just super infatuated right now. I mean I hope if I can keep his mind off the idea of marriage and we get to know each other better I hope he will too sort of get the idea that I want to wait.
Whatever 1ke is, sloppy on the topic of marriage is not it. I can guarantee that she made the assumption that a Catholic does not date people who are not known to be free to marry. Socialize, OK, as someone would socialize with a priest, but NOT dating. Period.Yep, I personally see a lot of posters who are “sloppy” for lack of a better word about this issue when they give advice. Now, I know that many of those posters do NOT actually believe this, and sometimes it’s awkward to place a disclaimer that “of course, annulment is not guaranteed but it seems you’d have a good case for it”, but I do think it can cause confusion and even scandal.
Actually, I know that, and you know that. based on having “known” her for a while and read her other posts regarding canon law, marriage, and annulment.Whatever 1ke is, sloppy on the topic of marriage is not it. It was a clarification worth making, but we ought to make it with the clear admission that we know 1ke is not even remotely sloppy on the topic of divorce and remarriage. (At all. As in: Zero sloppiness.) That is all I meant.Actually, I know that, and you know that. based on having “known” her for a while and read her other posts regarding canon law, marriage, and annulment.
However, we cannot assume that everyone else has kept track of 1ke’s posts. Many non-Catholics post here, many more lurk here, and I’m sure many would take that post as an assumption that it’s okay to date any divorced person, whether an annulment is granted or not.
Indeed, many apologists including the priestly ones has stated that there is no need to apply for an annulment UNLESS one wishes to remarry. Maybe they are speaking of someone who isn’t dating anyone yet but wants to find out if they are eligible to. But in reality, it seems many annulment petitions are filed by those who have already found a potential spouse, or have even civilly married that spouse already.
So I don’t think it really is that clear among Catholics if dating a divorced person is okay or not. I think many think “as long as I don’t actually have sex I am not sinning, and IF this becomes serious then I will request the annulment”.

**Well, there’s also the issue that not everybody on the forum is a life-long Catholic. There may have been a previous non-Catholic phase in their life.
**

**Wow–I think that is very imprudent advice. Wishes change, witnesses forget stuff, get older and die, the process itself is very time-consuming–it’s very imprudent to wait until one wishes to remarry to start the paperwork.
**

**Right. Which is why the advice is problematic.
Why not (if you think there’s a reasonable chance) submit the paperwork and then know for sure? That way you know where you are–either free or not free to date and think about marriage. **
This seems reasonable to me, BUT I think some apologists are reluctant to advise people to actively seek annulments, because they are sensitive to the accusations that the annulment process is so abused, that practically, it might as well be Catholic Divorce. Why not (if you think there’s a reasonable chance) submit the paperwork and then know for sure? We’re way off topic, but heck if I know why 2 divorces and a third marriage is “honest” and “pastoral” whereas 3 divorces and a fourth remarriage is over the line.I have certainly read many such accusations from Orthodox posters, that the Orthodox approach to allow for two divorces, but no more, is more “honest” and “pastoral” than the Catholic approach.
