SAN DIEGO – The head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego apologized Monday to the family of gay nightclub owner John McCusker, less than a week after decreeing that McCusker couldn’t have a Catholic burial because of his “business activities,” according to a statement released by McCusker’s family.

In a stunning twist to a controversy that has created an uproar in the San Diego gay and Catholic communities, Bishop Robert Brom also promised to preside at a mass in memory of McCusker at The Immaculata Catholic church on the campus of the University of San Diego.

It was only last week that the bishop forced The Immaculata to cancel McCusker’s funeral, declaring that no parish within the diocese, which includes San Diego and Imperial Counties, could hold a Catholic funeral for him.

At the time, the diocese released a statement saying Bishop Brom took the action because McCusker’s “business activities…were contrary to Sacred Scripture and the moral teaching of the Church.”

I was so proud of our Bishop when he made his origional statement!!! I am saddened by this change of mind. I wish he would stand his ground and stand by the Church!!!

There’s got to be a major story on this one.

I don’t think it is a good idea to criticize bishops, but when bishops make decisions that seem to be contrary to Church laws, they certainly should be asked to explain themselves.

In this case, what were the extenuating circumstances that called for an apology on the part of the Bishop?

Was he wrong in assuming that gay porno videos were being filmed at McCusker’s bar? Has he been threatened with a law suit.

In a society that separates Church and State, I wonder how a judge will determine what the penalty would be for withholding sacraments from a “member” of a Church?

I would think if the Bishops are responding to complaints from those seemingly “offended”, then they just may respond to an overwhelming show of support when they act as his original decision. Who does this trial balloon process remind you of?

I was surprised when he did the right thing the first time. I am not surprised he capitulated. Where are the Shepherds?

Who knows what happened? Maybe he caught hell from the homosexuals and pc types? I thought he had found his spine. Oh well, we bury just about anyone anyway. It was just sort of nice to think that we were beginning to pay attention to the problem of public scandal.

I just read Karl Keating’s e letter about this case. The deceased had some clubs that advertized “gay” porn stars, among other delightful things.

I gotta tell ya…

May I respectfuly suggest that with his “I won’t” and now “I will” - the bishop may causing more of a pubic scandal, than did the deceased?

Perhaps McCarrick did a Zogby poll for him to let him know what he should or shouldn’t do?

Enquiring minds want to know…

Boy this just shows, we need to pray more for vocations, pray for priests…and we need more adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Jesus did not say…keep on sinning to the sinner and I will honor you. No, he said, repent and believe, return to the gospel and sin no more.

I wondered the same. AND I’m just asking this, so please don’t anyone flame me: If his Ex. had just allowed the funeral in the first place, would it of necessity have given scandal or couldn’t it have been seen as the Church’s final mercy and solicitude toward a wretched sinner, which we all are? I mean, it seems it would have been a chance to speak to his assembled friends about Our Lord. I dunno. AND you can bet your sweet bippy that any Kennedy starting on the dirt nap will get a fair old send off, with incense included.

To the best of my knowledge every Irish and Italian mobster had 24 carriages of flowers and a High Mass in the days when we were a much more “strict” church…I mean Chicago funerals are famous. Those who had arranged for the “hits” were some of those who cried the hardest. 😛

I think the wishy washying around though has really muddied the water here and we have good ole Bishop Brom to thank for it. (Sigh) ----Rhetorical question: why don’t we have a sigh smiley - I do a lot of it.

Say it quickly 5 times:

Bishop Brom Blinked
Good. And let’s not for a minute forget that San Diego is part of the Los Angeles Archdiocese, and and enjoys, for the time being, the ruler of the world. Does anyone think that “he” wasn’t involved in instigating the blinking?

Pray for good priests that our chldren (few though they be), may have good bishops eventually.

Meanwhile, stick with St. Padre Pio (“hope, pray and don’t , worry”), and, ladies, console yourselves with the thought that these are wimps with whom you will never have to go home! 👍

That is not correct: the San Diego Diocese does not belong to the Los Angeles Archdiocese. And frankly I doubt that with his troubles the Cardinal of Los Angeels is going to concern himself with what another diocese is doing in this regard.

I am totally disgusted with Bishop Brom. All this blather about mortal sin, state of grace, blah, blah, blah. No wonder this church is coming down, one wretched slippery slope at a time. What are we to believe? Does not St. Paul and 1000 years of the Magisterium cry out against this purveyor of gay antics-gay porn as without redemption, unless there is confession, true repentance and penance? Have we another Oscar Wilde deathbed confession here,? Was there confession and repentance before his death?

The gay action people have grabbed the key media positions, are infiltrating our schools, destroying our church. When will we say ENOUGH! Our dear Bishop had his chance and now is seen as a willing tool of the Gay-Lesbian Alliance.

Have you guessed yet–I am outraged! Aren’t there more of us out there–just plain angry, hurt and not understanding this?

Has any diocese denied church services for deceased drug dealers?

I am from the San Diego Diocese, but now living in Texas… The news of Bishop Brom not allowing the funeral surprised me, I didn’t think he had the guts… The fact that he apologized doesn’t surprise me, its just Bishop Brom as I remember him 😦

I wish the auxiliary Bishop could take charge, he is great. Bishop Salvatore Cordileone

What in the world is going on here!!! I didn’t agree with the original decision, but assumed that there was plenty of justification if such an extreme course of action was being pursued. I hate to say, it but this Bishop now looks like either a fool or a wimp–neither of which is terribly admirable or consistent with leadership.
