I feel that you are very wrong, Kadaveri. This is the very style of teaching i.e. without really understanding, that makes any religious fundamentalism dangerous. Mohammad did not have an army at this time to take his revenge on this city which he revealed as a fantasy when he conjured up the angel of the mountain “to destroy the town” cos the kids threw stones at him. Do you think the punishment fit the crime? Destroy a whole town because children pelted Mohammad with stones? you say Allah says there is no compulsion in accepting Islam so why would an angel suggest such a severe punishment unless the angel was of the evil type?..Satan comes to mind.

I’d be more concerned with what the Qur’an and Hadiths say.

I don’t think the girl is being indoctrinated, nor do I think she is being taught hate.

She is asked two questions, “Who are struck by Allah’s Wrath?” and “Who are the misguided?”

This is, as far as I can tell, the only mention of Christians OR Jews in the entire clip. Correct me if I am wrong.

Now, Muslims pray 5 times a day, a total of 17 cycles (rakaat), each cycle involves repetition of the first chapter of the Qur’an, called Al-Fatihah.

The last verse or two verses read as follows:

Guide us (O Allah) to the Straight Path; the path of those on whom you have bestowed your grace, not of those who earned your wrath, nor of those who went astray.

There is a very common interpretation of this last sentence, that those who earned the wrath of Allah are the Jews, and that those who went astray were the Christians.

You can read it in a popular book of tafsir/exegesis, I’ll even quote you the link. You can read it for yourself if you doubt me. All it (the interpretation, which is not limited to any group of people btw) is saying is that the Jews and the Christians are not on the right path of God.

Muslims believe that Jews have abandoned the commandments which God has instructed for them. All Jews? No, not all Jews. But this description is of a people who have God’s Scripture with them, but who do not implement its laws. Notice that there are only a minority of Jews today who observe traditional Judaism (e.g., those who call themselves “orthodox”)

And Muslims believe that Christians have lost the true knowledge, the essence of the message which was taught to them. Muslims believe that the message was really tawheed, and that because Christians believe Jesus is God/SonofGod, that they are misguided.

Frankly, I don’t think this is hatred at all. The interpretation does not suggest hatred of Jews or Christians, it doesn’t recommend any action against Jews or Christians, except for guidance away from their path.

This is a way of saying do not follow the way of the Jews, or the way of the Christians. Because although Muslims believe that these people were given guidance they have abandoned the guidance or strayed from it.

It’s not hatred at all. And frankly, I would be astonished if Catholicism teaches anything different. I would be astonished of Jews really taught anything different.

Do you believe that Muslims are on the right path, or that they are misguided? Do you believe that Jews are on the right path, or that they are misguided? Don’t you believe that they should convert to Christianity instead, in order to achieve grace?

Muslims don’t teach their children that Christians or Jews are guided correctly, just like I’m sure you don’t teach your children that Muslims are guided correctly.

I take my little brother to Mass every Sunday.

I appreciate your concern, as for my comment, it was cearly not literal, the question of weather I intended it to be a sarcastic snipe or just a jokeing comment was ambiguious, which I cleared up, if I were trying to be rude I would have apologized.

I learned the “muslim faith” by reading the Qur’an. I didn’t learn it as a little girl with a parent having me quote back answers. What I explained here is what I learned sitting in a class, with a teacher, talking about the explanation of this verse. And that’s how I have learned Islam–reading books, and having them explained by a teacher.

What I explained, I believe. And I don’t think it’s hatred at all, I really don’t, I think it’s pretty much the same as what Christians and Jews teach.

Rather than take it literally, you can also look at it as a literary allusion. A metaphor, meant to teach a deeper lesson.

The underlying message is based upon the fact that Muhammad didn’t gather up all his friends and take revenge on the people living in the town. I’m sure he could have done this. Instead, he decided to stay true to the message he was bringing from God, and he forgave the people who were persecuting and threatening him, and left them in peace.

Pretty consistent with the message of another prophet I learned about as a kid…
