The secretary general of the Brazilian bishops’ conference said the Church is expecting more than two million people to attend World Youth Day 2013.
Church officials expect attendance at the 2013 World Youth Day to exceed that of the event last August, stated the bishop. World Youth Day 2011 was held in Madrid, Spain and brought together nearly two million at the Cuatro Vientos Airfield.
The 2013 celebration will take place in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.
“We think will have more than two million young people in Brazil,” the bishop said. “Rio is a very hospitable city,” he added.
Under Benedict XVI the international event has been held every three years. However, World Youth Day Rio will take place one year earlier, in 2013, in order to avoid logistical conflicts with the World Cup soccer championship, to be held in Rio in 2014.
Officials in Brazil are looking at possibly holding the vigil and final Mass at the Attero de Flamengo park, where more than 1.5 million people attended a Mass with John Paul II in 1997.
