According to a Brazilian media report, local clergy complained to the apostolic nuncio following a $600,000 renovation of the episcopal residence as well as renovations to the seminary, chancery, and a retreat house.
Priests also opposed the imposition of a 10% diocesan assessment on parish income and complained about prelate’s “rubricism” and “ritualism” in the liturgy, as well as his willingness to accept seminarians who had left other dioceses and religious orders, according to the report.
To warrant “resignation”, I would hope that his offenses included some of a more serious nature than these.

A $600k renovation is a cardinal sin. I’m surprised the Holy See didn’t just dispense with canonical process altogether.

The part about rubricism and ritualism makes me uncomfortable.

The allegations certainly seem to provide very slender grounds for such a severe penalty.
Nothing more substantial, however, has appeared in the local media so far (two links below).

The archbishop’s residence, built in 1962, had never had maintenance work done on it, the outgoing archbishop (now archbishop-emeritus) is reported as saying. Complaints were made, also, about his purchase of a minibus to transport seminarians to and from their classes. Altieri said it cut their travel time from 90 minutes to 20 minutes, since they previously had to take two buses in each direction.

I wonder what will happen to the Archbishop now? As others have said, he didn’t seem to be guilty of anything too serious…certainly nothing to warrant stepping down from ministry completely. At 63 he is still young for a priest. Will he still be permitted to minister in the archdiocese…saying mass, hearing confessions?

Do you think we have been the whole truth about the reasons for Altieri’s forced resignation?

In this interview Altieri says he is at the disposal of his Congregation, the Salesians. His immediate plan is to go back to the Salesian University in Rome.
