Brazilian art exhibition displays painting of assassination of Pope Benedict
The Sao Paulo Art Biennial exhibition is displaying artwork by Gil Vicente depicting his assassination of world leaders, including Pope Benedict XVI. Vicente’s charcoal drawing of the Pope shows him confronting Pope Benedict XVI with a pistol. The Pope has his hands upturned.

Gil Vicente explained the reason for drawing his sick series of images of assassination that he calls Inimigos [enemies]:

“Because they kill so many other people, it would be a favour to kill them, understand?. Why don’t people in power and in the elite die?”

What an idiot. Whom has the Pope killed? It’s possible that he killed enemy combatants as a fighter pilot in WWII, but I don’t think that’s what Sr. Vicente was thinking of.
And if anyone responds to my question with some poisonous claim about the Pope’s stance on sexuality/HIV/AIDS, I WILL REPORT YOU, and you will be placed on my ignore list.
 
There would be a huge uproar if this was a picture of Mohammed. But because it’s the Pope I guess that’s okay then.
 
When I hear of things like this happening, it makes me sad to think how hurt Our Lord must be that after enduring so much suffering on the cross people still refuse to embrace or accept the gift of his love and mercy. Let’s seriously pray for this individual and others like him so that they can become witnesses to God’s greatness, love and mercy. I pray that the Holy Spirit penetrate their hearts and souls and fills them with special graces, heal their pain and turn their darkness into light so that they can lead other souls to God. How must rejoicing there will be in heaven when this man repents and puts God in the center of his life.

Let’s not forget that liberation theology has dominated the CC in Brasil. pretty much the whole nation has lost respect for the CC. it wasnt so 20 years ago. today, the CC in brasil is no longer a good force against evil. scandalous statements by bishops, cardinals, and priests have brought much shame to the Church. it is unfortunately but it is true and until the situation changes and the pope gets a hold of the Church again, i am afraid is just going to get worse.
be also aware that communism in brasil is taking roots and it is becoming very strong in the minds of the people. i dont want to say too much about how communism has infiltrated the CC in brasil. It has, make no mistake about it.

You’re right, considering that you can be sentenced to 40 lashes and get serious death threats for naming a teddy bear Mohammed. Just imagine the fatwas, and the anti-Brazilian xenophobia, that would arise among loyal adherents of the Religion of Peace.

I’m still kinda new here, but threats like this are allowed? First he asks who the Pope supposedly killed, and if we try to point out that the artist (not us) “believes” it is those who died of aids because of the Pope’s stance on condoms, that we can be reported? Will we be banned?

If so, perhaps zdon would be so kind as to put me on ignore now, so I won’t have to accidentally try to clarify something and get banned. I really don’t like threats…

I agree with you, believe it or not.

I IN NO WAY condone or justify what this “artist” did------but I DO understand why SOME folks feel that Benedict XVI has caused “DEATHS” in the world.

Mostly because they can’t handle the Truth of Christ, God, and the Church. They mostly “speak against themselves.”:rolleyes:

Don’t condone it, but I sort of understand, to state again.

Zdon011 needs to calm down “just a tad.” I share his outrage but he needs to understand-----as long as the people who give these “reasons” don’t break CAF rules and are simply disseminating information about what other people think WITHOUT condoning it there is no reason why they should not be given a place in the thread here. 🙂
 
That’s just sick. Nowadays if you call something art, no matter how depraved or stupid it is, people will believe you because they don’t want to be accused of not understanding true art. It’s like an “Emperor’s New Clothes” sort of thing. I think that explains some of the “art” in the NC musuem of art here in Raleigh. One of them is a white canvas with five plastic seashells glued to it. :confused: Does that really deserve to be in a museum? It sounds like a preschool art project.

Are you saying the Pope was a fighter pilot in World War II? If so, I believe you are incorrect. This is the first I’ve heard of such a thing.

Your statement here that “the Catholic Church in Brazil is no longer a good force against evil” strikes me as somewhat scandalous and not very true. I might also add that the thread itself has nothing to do with Liberation Theology and your opinions concerning that particular brand of theology seem rather limited and uninformed. I seriously doubt that communism has infiltrated the Church in Brazil as much as it has infiltrated your own fears. As for the displayed paintings of assassinations of world figures, including the Pope, well, sensational art has seldom been good art, and I fully suspect this paticular artist is rather mediocre, if not in his painting, then in his thinking. Let’s forget about him.

Sorry. I was indeed very threatening and ‘aggressive’ in that post.

All I can say in my defence is that I have come across some extremely unfair arguments against the Pope in the past few weeks (and in a few cases I had felt compelled to give some sort of response). Minutes before I made that post I had just read a vulgar, expletive-laden message on another site which said (in a highly sanitized form): ‘The Pope is responsible for withholding education on HIV and contraception to Africans, and is responsible for their deaths. I heard he broke his leg a while ago. A pity he didn’t break his neck’.

The truth is, I’ve only ever put one member of CAF on my ignore list. I felt so bad about it, I took him off only a couple hours later. Nor did I report that member, though by CAF standards he had been highly uncharitable. So you see, my bark is very much worse than my bite. But that still doesn’t excuse the threatening tone I took.

Yes, I understand that there is a difference between explaining some of the unreasonable arguments some people make against the Pope, and actually condoning such arguments. I take issue not with the reasoning, but with the (usually vitriolic) personal attacks that accompany such arguments.

I have only ever seriously considered reporting a post on CAF once (and that was because of unnecessary sexual content). I have no desire to add to that. There are many threads that I enjoyed posting to and that I greatly regret being closed down, because for some reason posts on those threads were reported.
